Republican Sen. Ben Sasse (NE) on Wednesday night rebuked an effort by a ragtag group of fellow Republicans who have said they intend to object to the results of the Electoral College votes when Congress meets for a joint session next week to reaffirm the victory of President-elect Joe Biden.
Hard to think what Republicans do that is not a dangerous ploy.

Because this is a publicity stunt and is being used as some sort of measure of Trumpian loyalty, I am a little concerned that a lot of Republicans will support this in order to stay in good standing with Trump and his trash. That we will see a razor thin margin in the Senate with our whole democracy resting on Susan Collins, Mitt Romney, and Lisa Murkowski. Yes, it will fail if for no other reason than Democratic control of the house, but this reckless stunt will normalize the rejection of democratic elections.
I think Romney and Murkowsky, and perhaps Collins might be Sasse allies. I can’t think of anyone else. The market is thin indeed. At some point, these 4 folks might want to consider going independent like Justin Amash in the House. They can do some good by doing it sooner rather than later. The GOP is all in Trump now.

Well, good on Senator Sassy! Seriously. Many more Congressional Republicans need to pull themselves together and speak out against Wannabe Dictator Trump. He’ll lose his unfettered presidential power in a few weeks and be reduced to tweeting and subscription-paid rallies of the Hate-Filled.
Sheep feel safer in big flocks. The more Republicans stand up, the more will join in. They could use a good sheep dog; anybody who steps up to The Right Side of History and leads the Anti-Trump Rebellion will be remembered as the one who Saved America. (Because as we all know, Democrats never get any credit in the media.)
Repubs love power and will go to any length to achieve it or retain it, they hate America and will do anything contrary to the Constitution and the citizens of the country in their quest. The party is morally and ethically bankrupt and corruptly evil.
Sasse’s letter would be really good…if he hadn’t voted 11 months ago to acquit Trump in the impeachment trial. Sasse can say and do whatever he wants. He can even tell the truth! But, as Adam Schiff said, he will forever be bound by cords of steel to that vote.
When he had the chance to do something, and not just to talk, he failed.

You can write Senator Collins out. She’ll make concerned noises and lead people to think she might actually do the right thing, but her vote will be with the prevailing Republican orthodoxy every time. She’s fooled the people of the United States, and in particular of Maine, for decades now. The tiger doesn’t change its stripes.
