New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) expressed regret on Monday that he and other leaders across the world hadn’t responded to the COVID-19 virus more quickly when it began emerging in China at the end of 2019.
“I wish someone stood up and blew the bugle,” Cuomo said. “And if no one was going to blow the bugle, I would feel much better if I was a bugle blower last December and January.”
Don’t we all.
Too bad the Bugle Blower in Chief who was getting intelligence reports on the virus in December and January decided to ignore them.
And our dear Resident Rump is still deflecting any responsibility, and bragging about the awesome job he is doing. He’s reset the bar: ONLY 70,000 dead Americans will be a victory, a great job on his part.
If he had been given the information that Trump was given early in the game, I imagine he would have acted sooner. You won’t see any such statements from Trump, he has to find someone else to blame for his incompetence.
The US death toll from COVID-19 will exceed the toll from Viet Nam either today or tomorrow, I hope the press puts that in the headlines.
Cuomo said a version of this a few weeks ago. This is setting the stage for hammering the fuck out of Trump for not being the guy to ‘blow the bugle’. All the evidence shows that Trump not only ignored the warnings, he actively muzzled the corona virus task force, put Pence on their to silence them, and withheld information from the Governors, Mayors and the public. They left everyone in the dark and the Govs had to scramble with imperfect information to define a response with no time to spare. No response was perfect, but the Governors avoided the absolute worst case scenario of millions of deaths. If Trump had done his job, most everyone would’ve shut down 5 to 10 days sooner.
" There are many explanations for this divergence. New York is denser than Seattle and relies more heavily on public transportation, which forces commuters into close contact. In Seattle, efforts at social distancing may have been aided by local attitudes—newcomers are warned of the Seattle Freeze, which one local columnist compared to the popular girl in high school who “always smiles and says hello” but “doesn’t know your name and doesn’t care to.” New Yorkers are in your face, whether you like it or not. (“Stand back at least six feet, playa,” a sign in the window of a Bronx bodega cautioned. “ COVID -19 is some real shit!”) New York also has more poverty and inequality than Seattle, and more international travellers. Moreover, as Mike Famulare, a senior research scientist at the Institute for Disease Modeling, put it to me, “There’s always some element of good luck and bad luck in a pandemic.”
Every decent policy maker in the world wishes they had acted sooner, regardless of the outcome in their jurisdiction. The key word there is decent.
And, by the way, I was just wondering how much Amazon has made during this debacle that they might not have made if people had been able to leave their houses and shop normally. wouldn’t it it ironic if Dotard’s refusal to do his duty actually made Jeff Bezos richer?
One of the bits of good luck was having a CDC trained infectious disease specialist at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland. Another piece of good fortune, Dow Constantine picked up the phone and spoke with Brad Smith at Microsoft who then provided guidance to employees to work from home. The third bit of good fortune, Dow, Mayor Jenny, and the Gov. worked collaboratively.
