New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) offered a sobering message regarding the ongoing spread of coronavirus cases in the state during a press conference Tuesday.
Cuomo is speaking truth to power, but we all know that “the deplorables” capacity for granting totally unwarranted forgiveness and being complicit is endless.
"It’s like being on Ebay with 50 other states bidding on a ventilator. And you see the bid go up because California bid, Illinois bid, Florida bid, New York bids, California rebids. That’s literally what we’re doing.”
If only this country had provided for someone to have a national leadership position.
Cuomo added that FEMA’s involvement in bidding for ventilators, in addition to all 50 states, has only complicated the situation.
“So FEMA is driving up the price. What sense does this make?” Cuomo said. “The federal government, FEMA, should have been the purchasing agent — buy everything and then allocate it by need to the states. Why would you create a situation where 50 states are competing with each other and then the federal government and FEMA comes in and competes with the rest of it?”
This is Trump’s fault entirely. A competent leader would have understood this from the very beginning.
@jmartNYT@maggieNYT Sorry Jonathan, I don’t care how important you think you are, how important you think the @NYTimes is as a newspaper, but the political desk has been abysmal on this. I say this as someone who has worked on infectious diseases for 30+ years. 1/
"Why would you create a situation where 50 states are competing with each other and then the federal government and FEMA comes in and competes with the rest of it?”
Uh, because to Trump and those in his administration, corporate profits are more important than public health and human lives?
I simply do not understand why the NYT political reporters continue along this path. For anyone who tells me, it’s corporate journalism, I think that’s a shallow answer. Today, for example, the Washington Post had “More Deaths than 9/11” as their big headline all morning (not sure now). That information was not ANYWHERE on the Times front page - and it’s fucking New York City!
It’s mostly the political desk, In another tweet, Gonsalves praises the NYT health reporters and Krugman for doing a great job. I have no idea what’s driving those political desk folks. They have a grove going and they can’t get out of it for reasons perhaps they can’t even articulate.
