Though Congress has repeatedly failed to enact gun reform, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), one of the leading voices for gun control in wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in his state in 2012, predicted on Tuesday night that this time will be different after the recent shootings in Colorado and Georgia.
Did the shooter have anything in his background that would have prevented him from getting a gun, other than his family members that thought he was batshit crazy?
So Republican Senators are ready to pass up that sweet, sweet, Putin cash funneled through the bankrupt but still very active NRA? Honey, I’ve got my doubts. Flooding the U.S. with pro gun and antigovernment social media, which is exactly what the Russians have been doing fits perfectly with the GOP agenda to defeat Democracy.
Even if they do, it accomplishes absolutely nothing. Had such a law be in force, both the Colorado and Georgia shooters would still have walked out of the shop with their shiny new guns, but even if denied they will still had been able to buy one the same day from a private party.
We don’t need stupid gun control, we need disarmament.
This is low hanging fruit for Senate Republicans. If they pony up enough votes for the background check bill, which is wildly popular, they damp down the pressure for filibuster reform. If they don’t it will look like they are total obstructionists and filibuster reform will gain traction.
“Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), one of the leading voices for gun control in wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School … predicted on Tuesday night that this time will be different…”
This is, unfortunately, one of those things that the GQP campaigns on every election cycle: ‘They’re coming to take your guns’.
This is also, unfortunately, where the GQP is out of step with the American people if, in fact, the American people favor some kind of control (and the article says it has some 70% favorability). So this is just like the Covid Recovery Act. Maybe things can get passed without the GQP as the recovery act did. But with 24 GQP States taking to the courts because they don’t like it, we can assume the same thing will happen with any gun law that manages to get through both houses.
I have to wonder what our country would look like with a fully functioning and accountable legislature. I say this, knowing full well I don’t have it in Wisconsin either.
In other news:
The mommas and babies at the farm were released from their kidding stalls yesterday. We had a little kerfluffle with some of the mommas going on an unplanned adventure where they encountered some rhododendron, which is poisonous in small quantities for some goats. Almost 24 hours later and a lot of activated charcoal to neutralize the potential poison, this morning they all look good (we’ll know for sure in another day).
In the meantime, as Jon Stewart used to say: Your moment of Zen (and yes, Moo is photobombing the upper left corner of the photo!) :
Maybe if the DOJ did a thorough investigation of Russian money funding the NRA’s political contributions over the past two decades, some real patriots might realize what a scam it has been all along.
We need to point that finger every time they try to stop the process, just make it the Sword of Damocles hanging over their heads to shut them up. They all took dirty rubles, whether they knew it or not and I thnk many of them did.
Threaten the entire Republican Party with our own investigation into their NRA Deep State with Russian ties.
If thee ever was a certified “deep state” in America, it is the where the KKK and the NRA are hooked up to our military. When you consider the Russian money, the story gets so dark and dangerous, we need to plumb that depth exhaustively.
Hey, that’s demeaning to crazy folks, and besides, mental health professionals keep telling us that crazy people don’t shoot people. Best not to even ask.
