Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) sighed his way out of denouncing President Donald Trump’s recent bout of racist rhetoric aimed at “the squad,” telling PBS’ Margaret Hoover that he wishes “he would say things differently.”
“The President regularly says and tweets things I wish he didn’t say,” Cruz said. “Look, I wish he would say things differently. I don’t have the power to change that.”
An age-old myth says if enough senators wish for something at the same time it can come true!
But the truth of that is lost in the mists of time.
Weak, stupid and cowardly is no way to go through life, Ted. But the beard helps. He can stroke it thoughtfully as he contemplates how he has no power and was whip-spanked during the primaries by this global embarrassment.
He wants to return to the age of coded dog whistles rather than the blatant racist diatribes blurted out by Trump, which by the way, accurately reflect the belief system of Republicans.
Because I have been around Caribenos like Puerto Ricans, Dominicans and Cubans (who have families with first cousins who include people with Cruz’s phenotype, Rubio’s, mine and lots of African Americans) it has always required me to do a five-second-shift when looking at Cruz and his particular brand of Evil.
Cruz, and people like him are white in Cuba…and, if they can swing it here are white as well. And then it is a hop-skip and a jump to full-own whiteness.
But when Andy Garcia did his Arturo Sandoval biographical film, all I heard and saw was this big deal about the African connection of rumba (and the supposed connection of Sandoval with Africa).
Cruz is too evil to do this, but he could have originally branded himself as a straight-up Latino Senator (probably from a Blue State). Especially since he looks less “white” than some of the boriciuas Trump was dumping on after the Hurricane which devastated Puerto Rico.
Trump probably motivated a lot of voters who voted for Obama in 2012 but didn’t show up in '16 to vote in '20. Many did so in '18. He made it personal for a lot of younger folks, women and POC.
Trump made several blatantly racist and cruel statements, not just about Omar, but millions of Americans just like her, and all Cruz can say is he wish he’d hid it better?
I guarantee we’re going to have an epidemic of bullying in our schools this fall when certain kids start screeching “go back to where you came from” at some of their classmates, and teachers have to explain why that’s unacceptable even though the President says the very same dehumanizing things.
“I see this female has opinions that are in opposition to those held by my political party. This distresses me. I would prefer her not to speak, but merely to enchant her own circle with her expressive, fine eyes.”
or the more direct:
“no like mouthy girl”
Because it seems that you don’t object to his lack of vision, dullness or misogyny, just his vulgarity.
So @KateRiga I am still looking for the Cruz actions that rose to the level of bravery. Perhaps you meant douchebaggery. This guy is a fucking Canadian at birth, born to a Cuban secreted into the country in a way completely like the Central American refugees being vilified by the current cabal in the White House and you are calling Cruz brave? That is rich. Please edit the headline to help it match reality a little more keenly.
It’s personal for me, but I’m older now, and it’s not about me anymore. I am angry on behalf of the millions of kids whose shoes I was once in and probably don’t yet have the sense of self to deal with this racist garbage. Especially when it’s clearly advocated from the highest levels of government.
And I’m angry millions of my fellow Americans don’t have a basic understanding of what it means to be “American”. That it’s not about where you were born, but your belief in the “idea” of America and on the Constitution that’s supposed to guarantee all of our freedoms. And that a major American political party is only concerned about how it affects their electoral considerations rather than a substantial portion of their own constituents.
if wishes were horse we"d ride you and your ilk out of town. So, what exactly IS your job?
Would have been better to say nothing than this blather. You appear silly playing grown up.
