The CEO of CrossFit is stepping down after his tweet about George Floyd sparked a social media backlash and led to affiliated gyms and Reebok cutting ties with the exercise brand.
He said he had made a mistake and should have been more sensitive, but denied being racist.
āOn Saturday I created a rift in the CrossFit community and unintentionally hurt many of its members,ā he said. āI cannot let my behavior stand in the way of HQās or affiliatesā missions". . . Some 1,250 gyms have now severed links with CrossFit.
Shorter Glassman: Iām sorry I cost my friends some $$$. Iām not really sorry about what I said, nor have I found anything resembling a conscience within me.
You could fill a legal pad, single spaced, with the names of prominent white people, or less prominent but nevertheless highly paid, that have lost their jobs because of posting tone deaf or offensive comments to social media, or statements made in public or to the news media. When the hell are people going to figure out they just need to keep their mouths shut unless they are capable of expressing themselves with tact and diplomacy? Sheesh.
āOn Saturday I created a rift in the CrossFit brandās profitability and unintentionally hurt many of its stockholders,ā he said. āI cannot let my behavior stand in the way of HQās or affiliatesā yearly bonuses.ā
He forgot the second rule of CrossFit.
The first rule, opposite of the Fight Club, is that you must talk about CrossFit at every opportunity .
The second rule is, " Donāt talk about anything else, lunkhead."
The article didnāt mention that the CEO said during a private Zoom call āWe are not mourning for George Floyd
I donāt think me or any of my staff are. Can
you tell me why I should mourn for him?ā
Not only is he racist but heās on the wrong side of history.
āCan you tell me why I should mourn for him? Other than that itās the white thing to do ā other than that, give me another reason,ā he asked a Minneapolis gym owner who had questioned why the brand hadnāt posted a statement about the protests across the country after the death of George Floyd.
Still. Itās one thing for people to out themselves and realize (or have people make them realize) that there are all kinds of costs to holding and voicing such attitudes. But until/unless there are costs to the system itself that has aided and abetted the holding/voicing of those attitudes, well, weāll keep right on asking, āHow long, o Lord, how long?ā
