Court Doc Shows Govt’s Plea Negotiations With Famous Metal Guitarist Charged In Capitol Riot | Talking Points Memo

The federal government let slip Monday that it was negotiating a potential plea deal with a famous heavy metal guitarist accused of using bear spray against police on Jan. 6.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://talkingpointsmemo.com/?p=1368366

What possible “cooperation” could this seditionist fuck be offering that would be worth entering into a plea deal with?

Just a general question here:

But according to the court filing that was briefly made public on Monday, Schaffer has engaged in “a series of debrief interviews” with the government since March 2.

Are there reporters that sit there and keep hitting the refresh button on their computers to see what’s new in the court filings? I mean this isn’t the first, nor probably be the last time a filing that wasn’t suppose to be made public, got made public.

“Famous”? Really? I mean, like outside of Poland or whatever?

And I say that as a life-long metalhead.

I have no idea who this guy or his band is. (Then again, my music collection ends in the early 1980s.) What will the heavy metal mix of “Jailhouse Rock” sound like?

How he got involved, who got him involved, and any planning or coordination that happened before 01/06.
I realize that we talk about those on the right as lemmings, and they call us on the left lemmings too, but there has to be the person that comes up with the idea that it would be fun storming the castle. And was that person inside the WH or outside with connections inside.

I guss if he has something important about conspiracy its worth it. otoh, bear spraying a cop is a pretty serious no no, so maybe 15 years instead of 30?

If Jimi Hendrix himself had participated in the 1/6 attack on US democracy I’d still want him prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Bugger celebrity.

Wow. Never heard of him.

Hahaha I had to check if they were a new band and Metal was making a comeback. Nope they were formed in 1984…and have gone through 3 different names…not a famous Metal Band.

Damn, click bait title

Any deal that allows the fucker to own or carry firearms, tasers, or chemicals sprays should be blocked by the judge.

From Wiki

Currently, the band is composed solely of Schaffer and drummer Brent Smedley, with all other band members having departed following Schaffer’s January 2021 arrest by the FBI for his involvement in the Capitol riots.[8][9] Schaffer is currently in FBI custody on felony charges, which has generated new publicity for Iced Earth and has resulted in the band being dropped from their longtime label Century Media.

There is an old ditty that is mostly true that in America a rich man can get away with murder.

The question now is can a rich man get away with insurrection?

Just guessing here, but there are sites where you can sign up to have them notify you (by, for example, email or DM) that there is new content…

He was an oathkeeper, although later the group claimed he wasn’t and disavowed him.

So, likely, he’s able to give prosecutors the inside scoop on organizing that led up to the invasion, which would support conspiracy charges.

Per @emptywheel , Schaffer was involved with the Oath Keepers and could offer information on that strand of the conspiracy. Which could lead to people with more to offer on higher ups, and so on.

He’s not rich. He’s spent 30+ years intermittently playing in a band that has never gone anywhere beyond the metal underground and opening slots on the backwater European festival circuit. It’s not a lucrative occupation.
