Cori Bush Joins Chorus Of Progressive Dems Calling For Thomas’ Impeachment

Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) has demanded that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas be impeached for allegedly violating ethics rules through his lucrative friendship with a GOP megadonor.

I absolutely guarantee you that if this was one of the liberal members of the court The Democrats would be lining up to call for her resignation. This is mainly because public integrity is central to the brand, and a corrupt justice would be more damaging than not.

This is clearly not true of Republicans. The reason, clearly, is corruption doesn’t hurt their brand.

Well, I agree that Justice Thomas is overdue for impeachment and, one hopes, conviction. Sadly, it’s a political non-starter. Impeachment starts in the House, and the Republican House it totally happy with good ol’ Clare. The trial would be in the Senate, in which Republicans have 49 votes, which is plenty to block the 67-vote minimum for conviction.

Better to “take him to court” (the irony!) on his clear violations of various federal ethics laws.

Cori Bush really. I want to hear from Dick Durban.

It WILL be a political starter in the 2024’s and if team D takes back the House they can
make it their HB-02 (HB-01 being the enshrinement of Reproductive Freedom rights.)

But, yeah either way no R’s in the Senate will vote for a conviction…

But OTOH after all of them vote for acquittal then the NEXT item of business will be legislation to expand the Court.

They will treat Thomas like they treat Trump and say he did a no-no ain’t that cute?

He doesn’t need a law license to be a justice, and if removed from the court he’ll never mispractice law again.

I get the publicity aspect, sorta. Reality says impeachment talk is just pissing into a strong wind. The House isn’t taking it up and, even if they did, the Senate wouldn’t have the required votes to convict. So you wind up with another TFG situation, only worse, because now the justice is pissed and has a lifetime appointment.

Hammer the illegalities, corruption and amoralities of the situation to hold his feet to the fire which could result in resignation. DOJ has a role to play, too. Keep it in the forefront as an election issue. Don’t waste energy and resources on a losing strategy that doesn’t even have a tactical purpose.

Oh no, it’s another high-tech lynching.

Indeed. The humiliation factor is what I had in mind. It’s not like he is going to get any worse on the court.

“Take him to court” making a Supreme Court justice get a lawyer.

If Thomas had any feelings about ethics he’d resign. He hasn’t

Allegations from congressional Democrats that Justice Clarence Thomas probably violated federal ethics laws in his dealings with a Republican donor have been sent to a committee of federal judges responsible for “addressing allegations of errors or omissions in the filing of financial disclosure reports,” a top judicial official said Tuesday.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) and Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) had requested that the Judicial Conference of the United States investigate Thomas’s failure to disclose travel and real estate deals with his longtime friend and benefactor, Dallas business executive Harlan Crow. Whitehouse and Johnson said the conference should refer the matter to Attorney General Merrick Garland.

“There is reasonable cause to believe that Justice Thomas willfully failed to file information required to be reported under the Ethics in Government Act of 1978,” the Democrats wrote.

Sadly, a law license is not a requirement to be a Justus of SCOTUS. Crazy? Yep.

Neither does the blatant obstruction of confirming judges. Mitch the Bitch set that precedent with the Garland Nomination. Now the SOBs have the Judiciary tied up.
They just love throwing a kink into the operation of democracy.

Then They will expand the court, then we will expand some more. Sort of a losing proposition.

Corruption is their brand.

It is definitely the right thing to do. I am just afraid it is not the best thing to do right now politically. I think we ought to just let the RW keep shooting themselves in the ass - don’t give them something to rally around like impeaching Thomas.

I am a shitty pundit.
