Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) on Monday expressed an openness to calling witnesses in the Senate’s impeachment trial of President Donald Trump. But she refused to go into detail about how she might act during the trial.
Right, let’s criticize Warren because (choose one):
a) any evidence for or against conviction instantly flies into a black box about which one must be blindly impartial once impeachment is on the table or…
b) Collins is a gutless squish who’s pretending in her typical mealy-mouthed way to be an honest broker as if this routine hasn’t worn so thin over the years you can read through it.
Wow, Susan Collins says “both sides” are rushing to judgment. What does that tell us? Most likely that her 2020 polling is terrible and she’s angling for a mainstream media job.
On the positive side this does show she’s feeling the need to hedge her bets. She didn’t have to speak at all, and the fact that she has doesn’t mean nothing. I’d love to know just what that finger in the wind she’s holding up is telling her.
We’ll see how far it goes. That she’s saying it at all though means she’s feeling pressure. Nancy delaying sending the Articles to Senate is specifically designed to put her and other supposed fence-sitters in the hot seat.
Collins is in her most competitive race since she was first elected in '96. Her “bipartisan” approach isn’t playing well with Trump’s base here, who want her to be another lickspittle, a la Lindsay Graham. ATST she needs more than that base to win in November. She’s in a tough spot, since she’s already lost some of the conservative Democrat and Independent voters based on her vote for Kavanaugh. I see lots of bumper stickers reading “Bye-bye Susan,” and certainly hope that’s the case next year.
