Sixteen blue states as well as several localities are seeking to defend the current system of doling out U.S. House seats among states, which is being challenged in federal court in Alabama.
“The Alabama case has proceeded somewhat under the radar — particularly compared to the attention paid to the lawsuits that ultimately blocked the Trump administration’s move to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census.”
Oh sure. It’s easy to understand why the case proceeded under the radar; there are all those Joe Scarborough tweets to investigate.
The 1790 census, and every other census through 1860, counted slaves. They were counted, for census purposes, as 3/5ths of a person. But they were counted.
Therefore we have a precedent. Everyone is counted. It’s a precedent even the troglodytes of the Supreme Court are bound to accept. Everyone has always been counted, even if their rights as citizens weren’t acknowledged. So you can’t count anyone as a zero.
They’re all for states’ rights as long as it doesn’t let California protect its own environment or anything socialist-deviated-prevert like that.
The GOP has long told its base that Democrats favor immigration in order to expand their voter base.
This means that negative perceptions of the Democratic party on immigration is pretty much baked into the party approval numbers.
That being so, I trust that Democrats will–without any kind of advance notice or discussion–at the first opportunity grant citizenship to the maximum number of immigrants possible. With this kicker: that registering to vote should be facilitated and encouraged as part of the assimilation effort. To be clear: I’m saying that Dems should add ten million new voters to the rolls at the first opportunity.
Republicans can credibly make the argument that counting non-citizens is not counting “persons.” After all, the president* has repeatedly referred to them as animals.
“In a motion to intervene filed Monday, the states suggested the Trump administration could not be depended on to whole-heartedly defend the Census Bureau’s policy of including undocumented immigrants in its count for congressional apportionment.”
Might we restate this as “including ALL PERSONS” – I don’t think it’s likely accurate that the Census Bureau has a “policy” of including undocumented immigrants. Rather, up to now the Census Bureau adhered to the US Constitution.
They’ll make an argument that undocumented people aren’t taxed (despite the fact that any of them with work documentation pay taxes, including social security tax, with no expectation of a return for their money.)
Alabama is a state that provides very little contributions to our US Treasury! In fact it’s a state that takes more from our treasury than they put in. So why should we consider any of Alabama’s complaints?
Not the first time Trump’s DOJ is NOT defending America/Americans’ rights…in fact, it is very accurate to say Trump’s DOJ is assaulting Americans’ rights & protections such as ACA & Fiduciary Rule!
