House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) on Sunday told CNN that he plans to speak with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) about his vehement opposition to eliminating or weakening the filibuster amid Democrats’ efforts to advance their sweeping voting rights bill.
Somebody has to. I appreciate Clyburns leadership. I mean that I appreciate that Clyburn has been green lighted for this bit of theater. I predict Manchin is too afraid to change his obstruction, for fear of losing his seat. The carrot has now been tried. T’would be a shame to use a big stick on Manchin without just one more chance to get it right.
I hope a way to pass HR 1 and S 1 is found. It needs very badly to be done to ensure equal representation, especially with a conservative Supreme Court which is more interested in pushing (Christian) religion then justice.
How about schooling the voters of West Virginia? Hold a series of public conversations, two men in comfortable chairs on a high school assembly stage, with a socially distanced and masked audience, and the moderator’s only role to keep the conversation under control but not to pose any questions. Talk about the filibuster and anything else that comes up as a consequence. Local print and TV coverage only.
The best answer to Manchin and the Arizona sulky teenager with the green hair is to elect more Democrats to the Senate. The margin is too thin. Do we have a chance in 2022 to do anything about that?
One wonders whether Manchin and Sinema care about being on the wrong side of history. Unfortunately due to where both of them are from, but particularly WV, being “independent” of a towering figure like Clyburn will earn you stripes.
