Mark Galli, editor-in-chief of the evangelical magazine Christian Today, said on Sunday that he’s worried how other evangelical Christians refuse to speak out against President Donald Trump’s decidedly un-Christian behavior.
“But it strikes me as strange that for a people who take the word–the teachings of Jesus Christ seriously, the teachings of the Ten Commandments seriously, that we can’t at least say publicly and out loud in front of God and everybody that this man’s character is deeply, deeply concerning to us.”
There are others who can better explain this, but I am more concerned with outvoting them. If we do that, then Trumpism is something to recuperate from as opposed to a new way of Life.
“But it strikes me as strange that for a people who take the word–the teachings of Jesus Christ seriously, the teachings of the Ten Commandments seriously, that we can’t at least say publicly and out loud in front of God and everybody that this man’s character is deeply, deeply concerning to us.”
I wonder what he thought about Swaggart. Falwell. Other Falwell. Roberts.
Sheep get sheared, dude. Pretty sure even actual sheep aren’t all that surprised by it. Certainly not as surprised by it as this guy.
“I have no animus against them,” the evangelical writer said. “But it strikes me as strange that for a people who take the word–the teachings of Jesus Christ seriously, the teachings of the Ten Commandments seriously, that we can’t at least say publicly and out loud in front of God and everybody that this man’s character is deeply, deeply concerning to us.”
it’s largely the Administration’s . . . positions on religious freedom abroad
Except our holier-than-thou evangelicals live here, where the Administration’s position on religious freedom specifically excludes Muslims and frequently gives voice to anti-Semitism.
Christianity’s problem is they say they have sinned, and are sorry, then have some bread and wine.
So everyone they have screwed, in one way or another, means nothing because they have been forgiven.
They are now free to screw again.
Hey, if Mr. Galli can provide enough cover for even a couple percentage points worth of voters to stay home then that is great. Even better is if this turns into a major schism amongst the evangelicals.
While I appreciate this man’s honesty and willingness to address this matter, where was he while tRump began banning Muslims from the country, putting children in cages, developing policies that stripped SNAP and housing vouchers to the poor? Where has he been since IMPOTUS’s personal fixer admitted to paying off a porn star and woman he had an affair with while his wife had just given birth? Come on now. I do think this will impact some in the Evangelical community. Some, but this man is pulling a Jeff Flake. He’s practically out the door, retiring from that publication, so its easy to come out now as he exits stage left. That’s not bravery imo. That’s still cowardice to some degree. Still, if he wants to free his conscience from going along until now, I’m all for it.
I guess I don’t understand where all the accolades for stating the obvious comes from considering he held onto his opinions for far too long. I guess better late than never though.
Galli’s ‘brothers and sisters’ are theological slapnuts.
Franklin Graham is a birther and Junior Falwell supported Roy Moore.
Normal people have to outvote these cretins, but the former need to realize that the latter aren’t going anywhere. Evangelicals tasted power and though it could cost them in '20, they’re willing to look for a sleeker messiah, because in their minds, that’s the ticket.
It’s not about “pro-life” policies or religious freedoms abroad. It’s about the exercise of raw political power. Evangelicals have taken a bite of this rotten apple and have become quite smitten with it. This man, at long last, seems to have recalled a few of Christ’s teachings and appears to be stepping back from the abyss. I hope more follow his lead and not that of false Christians like Falwell and Graham, Jr.
