In any other context, it’d be a shocking fall from grace: a once-ascendant, Fox News celebrity congresswoman, who made leadership in her second year in office, is ousted by a political neophyte who’d once campaigned to get her incumbent opponent elected to the Senate.
I disagree with almost every policy position Cheney holds, but I respect her integrity and tenacity in standing for the rule of law and the Constitution as it pertains fighting the Big Lie and the lawlessness of Trump. On this at least, she fought the good fight, and hope she continues to do so.
Oh, Liz will be just fine. I’m sure there’s a fat paycheck waiting for her somewhere in the private sector. And she knows exactly where that is - has known since she decided to bet that the GOP wouldn’t overtly embrace the antidemocrratic positions they’ve held covertly for decades. She lost that bet. What a shame.
She’ll be back. She’s still young, is smart, comes from a politically savvy and connected family, has a lot of favors to call in, including now from some Dems, and has gained the respect of lots of people in both parties. She just has to wait out all this insanity until it finally passes, and it will, and will stage a comeback (and takeback of her party). And she’s been taking down names and will exact more than a little revenge. Count on it. It’s going to get ugly but it’s not our fight. Taking down the Trumpies, though, yeah, that’s also our thing. Well, prosecutors, that is.
She won’t just be fine, she’ll be back. That pendulum will eventually sweep these miscreants off the stage, and restore those Reagan/Bush Repubs. I’m not a fan of either but at least the latter are generally sane.
As my mom says, “some things are just not worth having.’” She’s close to 100 years old and a Holocaust survivor. She’s right. Cheney chose country over party because her party is not worth having.
I can respect this kind of courage and integrity where I find it. And anyone who wants me to throw just a modicum of mud on her to satisfy their exquisitely tuned moral sensibilities can—let’s say look elsewhere for your pound of flesh. When it came to the crunch she did the right thing. She sacrificed a seat in Congress for it. No mud from me.
She’s earned my respect on this too, lots of it. And I suspect that while she might not want to admit it, she’s also come to respect and admire some Dems she’s worked closely with, and perhaps moderated some of her past positions as a result, and also after seeing how the Trumpies exploited them. Traumatic events change you, often for the better, if you have grit and integrity. She’s someone Dems can work with in the future on policy, and in the meantime, I wouldn’t be surprised if Biden doesn’t name her to something in his administration–ambassador to Russia?!?
I don’t think I have ever had so much respect and admiration someone with whom I disagree so profoundly. I am very sad to see her lose, but the fact that she did not let fear of losing stifle her makes her all the more admirable.
LOL sure why not? Anyway I doubt very much she’ll get dusty on a shelf. She’s probably got about 15 juicy job offers in her pocket right now.
Seriously she’s an old-school pedal-to-the-metal conservative and that’s not likely to change, but she’s clearly a rational person. Sure, many of us here would differ with her on much and deplore much of it. But again, when it came to the crunch on the fundamentals, there she was, on the right side of the question, and a warrior to boot. She’s a person to be reckoned with and I’m pretty sure always will be. Again, respect.
