Census Confirms Plan To Rush Count Amid Trump’s Anti-Immigrant Policy Push | Talking Points Memo

Census Bureau Director Steven Dillingham announced Monday evening that the Bureau was officially speeding up its plans for the 2020 census, putting it on a counting timeline that the Bureau’s own experts said earlier this year was impossible due to the pandemic.

Yet another Trump Warped Speed project.

Yet another example of an absolute lunatic in charge of a feckless and clueless administration. Even in feeble attempts to tip the scales in their direction they can not develop a strategy other than “lurch left, lurch right, full speed into the wall.”

The GOP will do everything it can to stay in power.

I saw a comment some place (maybe here) yesterday, that the census MUST be done every 10 years, there is no prohibition from doing it sooner so if this works for Trump the Democrats could simply declare we need a new census on 1/22/2021

Exactly. Do a new census. And, by the way, in 1920 they did not reapportion Congress to reflect the new census results, but kept the 1910 apportionment in effect.

So, when they undercount places like New York and California, I say we just pay a pro-rated portion of our federal taxes. After all, they clearly don’t want those extra 3-5%.

The Trump Administration’s cynical political ploy is designed with one thing in mind: rewarding their political friends and harming cities like New York.”

Racist-in-Chief is on brand as ever with wanting to harm immigrants…
Forgetting that his grandparents were immigrants too who did NOT even speak fluent English,

The count is going to have to be redone. The necessary underlying data simply won’t be there.

The count is critical for so many reasons. Following reapportionment, I am concerned that in places where Rs will retain control of the state houses, the gerrymandering will be even more egregious than it already is. Only the voters can stop it. The health of our democratic processes will always ultimately hinge on voters taking an active role in sustaining it. SCOTUS did us no favors with last year’s ruling, except to hammer home our basic responsibility to protect and perfect our system.

has anyone told Cheeto Donnie he’s obligated to count all the children and adults being held by ICE?

The Vulgar Talking Yam knows he is not going to be President after next January, so he’s hoping the Census and reapportionment will be completed before he leaves office. Doesn’t work that way, sorry, Donnie; now shut the fuck up.

Why bother doing an accurate census when the results are going to be crudely edited in thick black Sharpie somewhere between being delivered to the President and being presented to Congress?

Existing law requires the Clerk of the House of Representatives to inform each of the states how many seats they are entitled to no later than January 25, 2021. There is no reason that law cannot be changed before the deadline. Firing up a legitimate census for 2021 is also good employment stimulus.

Those of us who work in the census have watched this shit show and understood that it was engineered to fail and now will.

Every single function of the U.S. government has been cynically politicized by the Trump GOP. Literally they make no effort to do anything on the up and up.

When will we be rid of this waddling crime wave?

I can’t believe this idea is just coming from tRump. This is, in theory a golden opportunity to weaken Democratic party representation and is consistent with Republican efforts that have been going on throughout the individual states for decades. Put the blame where it belongs squarely on the shoulders of the National Republican Party.

This travesty will require fixing next year. I don’t know how it can be done properly or legally, but this year’s census has been sabotaged by Trump & Sycophants, and cannot be allowed to stand.

Trump always feels compelled to cheat.

If you look at the maps of states with the most immigrants your notice that the top 6 are all red states. If this moves to actually removing the people it will hurt the states that elected him and have kept the GOP in power.
