CDC: 10 More COVID Cases Than Reported | Talking Points Memo

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Dr. Robert Redfield on Thursday estimated that the number of COVID-19 cases in the country may be 10 times higher than reported, which means that the actual amount of cases may top 20 million.

Well now that the south and southwest are fully engaged Iā€™m sure that they can break that record too.

Why be so specific, Redfield? You donā€™t know. Just say ā€œbetween 7 and 50 times moreā€ than reported.

Yeah, I know itā€™s still early butā€¦

Total US deaths are also probably higher, though not anything like 10X.

And 120,000 Americans would still be dead and a quarter of the entire workforce unemployed.

That basically aligns with what the German government found when they did intensive testing in the one town here that had a large outbreak in the early days. They pretty much blanket tested the entire area and found that their initial guesstimate of five unknown for every known case was off ā€” it turned out be around 10.

What iceberg?!

2 times is probably the ceiling. In the UK they give an ā€œexcess death figureā€ which is only 30-40% higher than official covid deaths.

Not counting Florida, of course!

If thatā€™s true, wouldnā€™t that make the mortality rate lower than what is being reported?

In the meanwhile,

White Houseā€™s Kudlow on new hot spots: ā€˜We just have to live with thatā€™

Larry Kudlow, the White Houseā€™s top economic official, said Thursday that the administration does not anticipate a second wave of the novel coronavirus to hit the United States and that new hot spots popping up across the country are scenarios Americans will ā€œjust have to live with.ā€

Or, we can get sick and die with that.

Yeah, but it is based on some logic

Redfield explained that for every confirmed case of COVID-19, 10 more people had antibodies

We always knew it was some multiple of positive cases.

See what happens when you do more testing? Trump must be livid, one hopes.

Except not all cases may produce antibodies or the antibody assays are very low.

This is going to make Donnie very, very angry.

Yes, the mortality rate is lower if the case rate is 10x higher, because Covid deaths may be somewhat higher than reported, but not 10x. The best estimate for the death rate is between 0.5 and 1 % of all infections. Thatā€™s 5-10 x higher than flu,so not trivial. Also, death is not the only bad outcome-there is permanent lung damage, strokes and other things that can have a serious permanent effect on some of those who recover.

A very strange beast this virus is. A large number of those infected get sniffles or no symptoms at all and others die or or permanently damaged.
