A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.
Just hours after he was caught on tape trashing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Putin-esque terms at a recent town hall, far-right Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) held another town hall at a North Carolina county Republican HQ on Thursday and expressed his deep regret that there was an election.
The real reason the feds haven’t indicted Trump (“I’m going to say it out loud. If Trump were charged, it’s unlikely he would negotiate a plea deal. Instead, he would go to trial and make every step of the process a platform to cast himself as a victim of a vindictive Biden administration. He would use the renewed attention to spew lies about the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election. And he would raise money, lots of money, to fund his anticipated 2024 presidential campaign. But most important, despite a mountain of evidence that would convict most people many times over, Trump would not be convicted. Criminal convictions require a unanimous verdict. On a 12-person jury, there are going to be Trump supporters.”)
Why the hell aren’t we allowed to see Flynn plead the 5th on national TV?
The Dems are missing so many opportunities to get the people to understand what really happened on January 6th. Seeing people like Flynn before our very eyes is well…eye opening.
I don’t buy any of this talk about Garland letting Trump off the hook. It’s still damn early in the process. There isn’t a bigger challenge than this. It takes time; we need time; we have time. It’s damn well worth the wait.
Between the Mad one from NC and rick scott we’re being shown what a significant portion of the fascistgop regards as a winning platform. No more stinkin’ elections, raise taxes on the poor and the elderly, rid ourselves of the horrors of social security, kill the gays, establish the most corrupt authoritarian dictatorship possible.
How do they expect to win with this platform? By lying and cheating. By the use of violence. By having the fascist five supremes declare them the victors.
It won’t work, but they’re promising us it’s going to be ugly.
Few people in Brighton Beach, home to one of the world’s largest concentrations of immigrants from the former Soviet Union, are indifferent to Putin’s war on Ukraine. Many were themselves refugees from Soviet Ukraine and are horrified to see Russian artillery shells hit apartment buildings and a new generation torn from their homes by an oppressive regime.
Rakhman said removing Russia from her store’s name was not intended to diminish the local Russian community and while some people are angry, others have thanked them for supporting Ukraine. While the store’s awning remains bare for now, the owners plan to announce a new name that is “inclusive of our entire immigrant population, rather than just Russia” as soon as their new sign is delivered.
Brighton Beach became known as “Little Odessa” after tens of thousands of Russian-speaking Soviet Jews, many from the Black Sea port in Ukraine, settled there in the 1970s. When Rakhman arrived from Odessa as a toddler with her family in 1974, she said, the community didn’t delineate between those from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus or other Soviet republics: “We were all just Soviet refugees trying to find our way and helping each other.”
Though there are a lot of them, they’re a minority, Ralph. They have big megaphones and they’re bullies, but we outnumber them, and there are many more good, caring people here.
We have to keep fighting and never give up. It will take courage and will.
