The chairman of the U.S. Capitol Police union called on acting Chief Yogananda Pittman to “stand aside” Wednesday after new details in a Senate report released earlier this week highlighted failures of USCP leadership in preparation for the deadly Capitol attack on Jan. 6.
“The time has come for those in senior leadership who failed us, to stand aside. It is not enough to scapegoat others,” Gus Papathanasiou, chairman of the U.S. Capitol Police Labor Committee, said in a statement first reported by NBC News.
I know it sound like a flimsy excuse but I do think that law enforcement, and other associated agencies were trying not to repeat what happened in the Lafayette Square incident. Which was also a lack of communication.
I’m also pretty sure that Trump aligned heads of agencies pooh-poohed the idea that Trump supporters would do what they did, well because they’re not Antifa.
From the moment Pittman was named the new chief, I figured that she got the nod because as head of intel, she was sounding an alarm that no one else would hear.
That may or may not pan out following a full and objective investigation, but I continue to hold it as a probable explanation for her promotion.
I’ve always been inclined to read that at as a gloss for, “We weren’t gonna treat the Prez’nent’s supporters like a bunch of BLM/Antifa goons.” Why not is a question for investigation.
As the investigations into Lafayette Square was still open in January, with no findings issued, it would seem premature to sideline much of the usual preventive security out of fear of possible negative “appearances.”
ETA: It’s made even more bizarre; because, even a cursory familiarity with the internet talk ahead of 1/6 woulda made it clear that, unlike BLM, the Prez, nent’s supporters were out for blood.
I reflexively distrust anything a cop union leader has to say, they are all Trump-loving fascist thugs in my book. Wonder what Mr. Papathanasiou has to say about those officers that were taking selfies with the rioters.
Helpful to remember that Trump was trying to destroy every federal office in his desperation to overturn the election. The attempt to overthrow the DOJ happened just days prior. The insiders in all the other agencies would have been watching those moves.
Jan 6th and the outcome saved us from a lot worse to come.
Some of the families were upset that their member officers were attacked by the crowd since, they said, these officers voted for the Orange One. My immediate thought is they brought it on themselves and that makes me less sympathetic.
Meh. Low energy, and now that covid is over, people have to go work and shit. Covid shutdowns were a unique period for protests and insurrections, where a lot of people who would otherwise be occupied in daily life had a bunch of free time on their hands.
People who are working and going about life don’t have the time and don’t want the personal risk of loss of property, jobs and their freedom.
Who were the guys in the unmarked vans who scooped people up, then released and did not charge them? Myself, I’d guess they were on loan from Pinochet, but has it been determined and made public?
