After failing to prevent a torrent of Trump supporters from breaching the Capitol on Thursday, the Capitol police force issued its first statement on the event.
interesting take. how does that jive with videos posted on twitter whereby by officers opened barricades intentionally letting the rioters into the capital and thus, unlawfully disrupt congressional actions?
The main thrust of Sund’s remarks was that the police had been prepared for “maintaining public safety in an open environment,” but not for an overwhelming “violent attack on the U.S. Capitol.”
I don’t know who else was watching live, but MSNBC periodically posted shots for at least an hour of CH officers standing on the outside area to the left of the top of the main entrance stairs, just watching as the mob pushed through and occupied the Capitol.
Literally just standing around watching, some of them casually putting on some riot gear, but no hurry at all. A reporter commented that it looked like they were “awaiting orders”.
ETA: it might have been MPD officers, so maybe there was a jurisdiction issue
But it’s still unclear from the statement how many officers were initially deployed to protect the Capitol, and when federal partners got involved, and why it took so long for that to happen.
the wednesday protest/insurrection was expected to be peaceful, yet the BLM protests about equal rights this summer was expected to be nonpeaceful leading to a strong show of force. how’s that?
In the Thursday statement, Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund said that while his office had developed a “robust plan” for peaceful protests, it was unprepared for “criminal riotous behavior.”
Who would have though that law-abiding citizens, supporters of the law-and-order party would ever do such a thing as riot? Only dark skinned people and hippies do that.
Some reports have suggested that Capitol authorities were planning for a subtler presence in response to criticism about the heavy-handed response to Black Lives Matter protestors from over the summer.
Sorry, but that answer won’t fly.
Like Trump, his insurrectionists have been planning this all in the open for weeks. If the Capitol Police can’t protect Congress from a clear and obvious threat, then they need to either resign and plead incompetence or be prosecuted for being complicit.
Congressional Dems and Biden need to clean house at the USCP.
I remember asking on the other thread why these officers, while their ranks continued to grow, were standing in formation for a full hour before they actually started to move, toward the time of dusk. By that time, many of the insurrectionists had left the area and move to other locations.
The damage had been done, in part, while they were just standing quietly in formation. Didn’t make sense then and still doesn’t now.
A friend once advised me that if, when driving, one asks oneself if one should turn on the headlights, one should. Protection services might want to adopt an analogous rule-of-thumb with regard to the threat of violence. I would have thought that was obvious. Guess not.
