Bolton Reveal Seems To Sway Moderate GOPers Towards Witnesses

An episode in former National Security Adviser John Bolton’s unpublished manuscript seems to be swaying at least a couple moderate Republicans to call for witnesses’ inclusion in the Senate impeachment trial.

When the old ways finally collapse it will be a shame, almost.

Limping into the distance. What comes after is more important.

Everything that brought Trump to a position where he could abuse power has to change, from gerrymandering, through Citz United, electoral college, the works.

The serious question is - what if Trump hadn’t been a dolt? If he had the slightest intelligence none of this would have come about.

When/if the GOP get in again, they won’t make the same mistake again.

Collins will vote to allow witnesses, but only on the condition that they not be questioned by anyone.

Knowing Mitch as I’ve come to know him, he’s going to put his foot down and demand fealty to the cover up strategy.

However, when a sufficient number of his troops refuse to fall on their swords for him, he usually buckles and does a last minute CYA and surrender move while providing an escape hatch for the fight to be continued to a later time. I don’t think he’s equipped intellectually to see the long-term b/c the ability of the GOP to shape media narratives combined with the Democratic coalition’s inability to recognize the importance of turning out to vote in mid-term elections and to stay united in tighter elections (e.g., 2016, but you could make the same point about 2000/2004 when he wasn’t the GOP leader but was in the leadership) have allowed him and his crew to get away with bad decisions.

I’d still lean towards the GOP not providing the votes for witnesses, but it will be a major political loss for them and Trump.

That’s what they said about Nixon and we got Reagan…

The fact that witness testimony is controversial at an impeachment trial is flabbergasting.

Who the F cares what the details are of the witness? How would one know without evidence and testimony? It’s putting the carts before the horse.

I dunno, they might. They really and truly are not the brightest bulbs in the pack. However, they are really EXCELLENT at demagoguing and dividing people, playing to prejudices and worst natures, assisted, of course, by whatever malignant forces are abroad in the world at the time…

“Sway” is the perfect descriptor for these damned Repubs. They sway just like sea weed in turbulent waters, i.e. they go this way, they go that way, they go this way, they go that way… They never take a definitive stance.

Didn’t take the root the last time. We have to go deeper.

The only fig leaf I can see them having is to blame it all on Rudy and tell Barr to have him indicted. Then they can say Trump was misguided but had good intentions and therefore…acquit.

Helluva start to the Infrastructure Weak Pivot.

That looks like two nearly definitive yes votes for witnesses and if the Dems have Romney and Collins, they probably have Merkowski, too. It’s looking more and more like Pelosi’s delay in handing over the articles to the Senate was a genius move, even if it does mean this story is now fighting for attention with the coronavirus and the helicopter crash.
