["Chances Of Votes Today Are Still Unclear (Cristina Cabrera)
There are a couple of conflicting new reports out on Twitter on CBC chair Beatty’s comments after her meeting with Pelosi just now. According to Politico, Beatty said Pelosi had told her and the rest of the CBC’s leadership that there would be a vote on BIF and a vote on the rule for reconciliation. Punchbowl also reported that Beatty had said definitively that there would be votes on BIF and reconciliation “shortly.”
But Fox News reported that leadership hasn’t actually approved that plan and that Beatty was only describing what she thinks ought to happen today. AKA things are very much still in limbo."]
That last piece of this reporting is made for snark, so I’ll leave it alone on that
Well, that’s really at the heart of a lot of things. Biden and Democrats in general use The Process, go through all the steps, the bills, the compromises, yada yada. But hey! All Trump had to do was poke out a tweet on his little tweety-phone, and things happened!! He didn’t need no stinkin’ “legislation.” And, if he wanted to really formalize things, he’d have a flunky type out an Executive Order on Executive Order stationery and scrawl his sharpie across it. Done!
So obviously, that’s all it takes. And Dems have shown themselves to be totally incapable.
It’s been the norm up in this part of the country that they cannot turn off your gas or electricity once the heating season kicks for many decades since a few people froze to death after cutoffs:
Minnesota’s Cold Weather Rule (CWR) is a state law that protects residential utility customers from having electric or natural gas service shut off between October 1 and April 30.
Thanks. It looks like renters facing eviction have to be ready to take action. If they do, they should be able to stay until next June. Inaction is no excuse.
I’m not defending the weasels that are doing a less than stellar job of fulfilling their responsibilities - just making the point that the time when the Senate or the House is not in session is not all time spent on “holiday” sunbathing at the beach.
Keep in mind that billions of dollars in rent support money are sitting there - not even applied for. Which means there are landlords who have tenants who have not paid rent in over a year, who are not applying for rent support, who still have to pay the mortgage on their buildings.
I’ve read several articles where they landlords have given the rent support info to the their tenants and they aren’t interested.
The outreach seems to be there, but more than a dozen state programs have still spent less than 10% of their rental assistance funds. At least six state programs, including Arizona and South Carolina, have still distributed less than 5% of their aid.
The funding is only a fraction of the money allocated by Congress to help households behind on rent during the pandemic. To date, just $7.7 billion in payments have been made to help those in need out of the $46 billion that was approved last December and March, meaning more than 83% of the money has not yet been spent.
I disagree. Providing dental coverage to seniors, paid family leave, action on climate, among other things, are not extreme positions. Not to mention most Americans support these things. I hope the progressives hold strong. Once the senate passes BBB, then the house can send over BIB. This should be non-negotiable. Passing BBB is essential to preserving the Democracy you mention.
“If our six colleagues still want to wait for a CBO score, we would agree to give them that time — after which point we can vote on both bills together."
Jayapal is really going to the mat on this one. BBB and BIB should be treated like Siamese twins that share the same brain. If you separate them they both die.
This is somewhat astounding as the assumption of traditional economics is that everybody acts in their best interests. But there is a body of economic literature on the subject.
Possible explanations for the differences in decision-making by the poor are that poverty may increase attention to costs, and/or it exposes one to more risk, which causes people to give more weight to current versus future outcomes.
Sure and the drama over the entire mess is tiresome. The Congressional Black Caucus wants action today and Dems need to simplify their message. Biden summed up BBB in a couple of sentences. At least one member of the media gets it right but Dems for whatever reason do not do this. They are too frickin’ busy playing king/queen of the mountain and running to the mics.
Carville has a unique way of making a potentially cogent point in a completely off putting and condescending manner
You might agree with some of what he says, but what’s the cost to your psyche to ever agree with that grumpy asshole? LOL
