Rep. David McKinley (R-WV), who broke rank alongside 12 of his colleagues to vote for the bipartisan infrastructure bill last week, decried the politicization of his support for the bill from fellow Republicans.
Why is it that Old Crow Mitch McConnell voted for a terrible Democrat Socialist Infrastructure Plan, and induced others in his Party to do likewise, when he was incapable of getting a great Infrastructure Plan wanting to be put forward by me and the Republican Party?
After Trumpâs tantrum about how itâs all Mitchâs fault that the Trump administration to everyoneâs non-astonishment somehow failed to produce an infrastructure bill, you need have no doubt this is a huge achievement for Biden and a tribute to everyone who helped bring it about. I need hardly add how much good itâs likely to do. If the feds have anything, itâs deep pockets, and we really do need to pull our socks up with everything from bridges to bit rates. God knows Trumpâs âstatementsâ are uniformly idiotic lies, but here you have every news source telling the story of how he stormed out of the meetings that could have given him a similar bill because he was in a snit about other stuff he caused himself. And here you have a GOP House member saying come on, guys, this is stupid. It does your heart good to see it.
ETA and letâs remember you have to assume this McKinley voted and spoke as he did because the bill is popular with his constituents. Itâs a rust belt area with a below-average median household income.
An individual who is at the emotional age in which total attention to him is required. The problem is that there are millions with this characteristic who are far less harmful.
âThe first time that we have a chance to vote on infrastructure in approximately 12 years, 15 years, weâre going to vote no? All because of politics?â McKinley said.
Probably worth noting that with West Virginia losing a House seat next cycle, McKinley is likely looking at a primary race with Rep. Alex Mooney. That will be an interesting contest between a relatively sane and practical, old-school Republican and a complete nutbar.
âI walked into the room and I told Sen. Schumer and Speaker Pelosi, âI want to do infrastructureâ ⌠but we canât do it under these circumstances,â Trump told reporters."
YepâŚwhen everything is made transactional (here, him trying to demand that all Russia probe activity stop in exchange for the country getting infrastructure improvements), sometimes people arenât buying.
Trump never even tried to get an infrastructure bill passed. He had no plan. He had to shut the government down for a month to get funding for his wall, didnât get it and had to rob military bases to get it.
