I must say I’m surprised by the energy being expended here in opposition to McCain’s appointment.
Ambassadorial appointments are often made for political purposes. Some should be considered more carefully, but Biden is not going outside the lines in appointing McCain to the World Food Programme.
People can denigrate McCain’s experience, but even a quick Wikipedia scan shows she has remained involved in international aid, even after her stroke. Mostly at board level or on inspection tours, but at 66 years old, with her health issues, I really don’t expect her to go out and clear landmines herself.
The real game is on the political field, specifically here in Arizona. We need to make a strong run at the governorship, pick up some seats in the legislature, and reelect Mark Kelly in 2022.
I didn’t like John McCain and I have decidedly negative feelings about Cindy and the rest of the family. But a big chunk of old-school Republicans and independents in Arizona revered the McCains. I think Biden has gained ground with this appointment in a way that will be hard for the GOP to directly counter.
