I’m giving him a pass on this. The former occupant handed him such a disastrous mess, it’s imperative to fix that before opening our borders to more. The treachery and depth of the T**** cesspool hasn’t yet been reached.
You are so right. My parents came to the US after WWII. The US was pretty stingy WRT how many could come in and my dad was on the waiting list for 3 years (nowhere near the waiting list for those from Central America). My uncle didn’t want to wsit that long and immigrated to Canada instead - he and his family have been Canadian citizens for many years.
This is a better outcome, but the way it’s happening is going to look really bad. At least it’s a long time to the next major election. I just hope there aren’t more episodes like this, or the “Biden isn’t in charge of his own Administration” narrative could get some real traction.
Sounds like a job creation opportunity.
Not one of the Von Trapps, are you? I mean, considering the settlement in VT
Naw, he was fucked no matter what. Any number would have fallen short of the original promise, which pretty clearly now was made when his folks hadn’t found out just how badly Trump’s folks had gutted the offices on their way out the door.
Hmm …
The White House said Friday President Joe Biden will set a new, increased refugee cap next month after facing a barrage of criticism when officials confirmed to CNN and other outlets that it would remain at the historically low level set by former President Donald Trump.
Could have avoided all this.
Of course, we still have to keep pushing in advance of their next move.
Where by we obviously I mean such “BernieBros” as Nancy Pelosi, Dick Durbin, et al.
He heard you and got better!
Now we see what he does next month.
“No, vee just happen to like schnitzel.”
The update is that Biden is raising the cap and will announce numbers by May 15 for FY 2021 (remember that 4 months of FY 2021 were under Trump).
They clearly did some clean up on Aisle 9 and credit them for doing so (wish the CDC would take note regarding their messaging on J&J, but I digress).
That said, the essential argument by Team Biden still remains valid: they are going to clear the previously approved backlog and raise the refugee cap for FY 2021 but that reaching 62k is unlikely given how decimated the system is that they inherited + the lack of full staffing (we don’t even have a new head of CBP yet) + the limitations of COVID. The immigration system we inherited was basically like a house that has been decimated from within and repurposed as a meth lab.
If COVID cases and deaths diminish with more vaccinations (see Israel and UK) and Biden gets his full team in place by May, I’m fairly confident they will be able to raise the cap higher in September for FY 22.
Agreed.
Thank you Biden for stepping back from the edge.
Edit: let them all in. All of them, without screening. Why should we be afraid of immigrants, who are all statistically less likely to be a criminal than native born people?
Thanks for that comment. Hope people were able to successfully extinguish the fire in their hair.
During a pandemic that still hasn’t been controlled? Do you think that’s wise? What’s happening with those who are still in detention centers?
You mean the people trying desperately to defend a move that Biden himself has now backed away from? Yes, I hope they’ve calmed down, now that the need for their services has abated at least temporarily.
I don’t want more people coming over now until we’re in a better position to take them and take care of them.
Why do you?
Careful. I think your hair may be on fire.
Ok Biden appears to be dithering on this and it is not helping. We love you, Joe, get your shit together on this.
Not at all. I’m perfectly satisfied with the way it’s being handled.
Immigrants, with or without papers, are one thing; refugees are a particular group, and are all carefully screened in their home countries before being granted refugee status by the US government.
