Pshhh that’s easy to get around via quartine and testing, covid is no excuse.
Really? I’m intrigued.
Is there maybe a Trump tax-cut for the wealthy that Biden could fully reverse? It could help!
There you go again.
Or the upper-middle-class families getting $3600 per kid in cash from the Duggar Breeding Act can send along those checks.
I see an awful lot of whining from the left when it comes to this stuff, I don’t see anyone saying, “Hey, Biden, how much money and people do you need to get to these refugee targets and handle the border crisis, and Congress will send the check over”.
Anyhow, I’m out.
Nope. When Biden said relaxation of the of the refugee limits, they heard everybody is welcome. The chaos as all those people trying to smuggle minors across the border is problematic in many ways, not the least that raises popularity of the xenophobic Trumpists.
I understand the problems of the immigrants, they face extreme poverty and in many cases violence. But our democracy barely survived the Trumpist coup, our margins in the house and senate are thin and non-existent respectively. We don’t need to give the republicans ammunition. If that means that those people in Honduras and Guatemala are going to continue living in the brink of starvation so be it. Once we recover normalcy and the Tucker Carlsons of America are kicked out prime time TV, we can start letting more people in.
Here are some “BernieBros” to add to your collection:
Shortly after the White House revealed Biden’s plans, [Senator Bob] Menendez publicly released his letter, which now reads as a rebuff to the president’s actions.
“Failing to issue a new Determination undermines your declared purpose to reverse your predecessor’s refugee policies and to rebuild the Refugee Admissions Program to a target of 125,000 people in FY22, and threatens U.S. leadership on forced migration,” Menendez wrote.
Another powerful Senate Democrat, Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (Ill.), said the “Biden Administration refugee admissions target is unacceptable.”
"These refugees can wait years for their chance and go through extensive vetting. Thirty-five thousand are ready. Facing the greatest refugee crisis in our time there is no reason to limit the number to 15,000. Say it ain’t so, President Joe,” added Durbin.
Also on the list: Nancy Pelosi and others in leadership.
All “BernieBros,” I guess!
Wake me up when they actually send over legislation to provide the resources.
Oh, they haven’t?
Quelle surprise.
It’s very easy to send a nasty letter over, when Congress holds the purse-strings.
Or do we want Biden to be the next Trump, and just do whatever he likes with money, no matter how Congress directed that it be spent?
What to do with the people who need help most is a tough question it’s also very complicated. Yesterday I made a similar comment. It’s not just, bring refugees in and see what happens. There are really important social, housing, health etc issues; complete infrastructure.
There are more upsides to immigration in general and for refugees it’s a win win only if they can be integrated in a way that everyone else sees it as a win win.
As you already know, we Canadians take in more then our fair share. In fact we are the leaders. We took in about 4 or 5 thousand more per year then the Rump administration. Our population is one tenth of yours. We also have, for the most part, better health and social welfare benefits and in general a better safety net than America’s.
I mention this because it’s a freaking struggle for us to do the right thing all the time We also have Conservative detractors. They are as vapid as yours. Somehow most of us manage to remain faithful to the notion that it takes a village.
That is all.
The constraint here is not “resources,” unless you’re talking about political courage – or even just political good sense.
But perhaps now that you’ve seen a (growing) list of angry Biden supporters, you may actually abandon your ridiculous vendetta against “BernieBros”!
Which was the point, remember?
If it walks like a BernieBro, talks like a BernieBro…
I can fully respect Pelosi while also noting that she and others aren’t offering up specific solutions-- they could be asking Biden “How much money, how many new personnel allocations do you need in which departments” etc.
BUT… Congress loves playing the shell game, and pretending that everything can be done with the resources in place, and never wants to grow government because that’s bad.
I much prefer the honest debate. Let’s have it out there. Whether it’s ten billion, fifty, two, whatever. Then have Congress either pass it or don’t.
You, I think, know the political games much better than you’re pretending to here.
I’ll fetch you some Kleenex® but, alas, not before tomorrow.
Nowhere did the Biden administration say it was keeping these limits in perpetuity.
Since we are a short 5 months away from the new fiscal year, I would expect these numbers to change before September 30.
Nor does this have anything to do with the eminent domain issues at the Texas border, which will also change for the better as soon as the appropriate staffing is complete.
President Biden can’t just wave a magic wand and end federal court cases.
Everyone needs to stop running around with their hair on fire because news media of whatever stripe are reporting in ways deliberately designed to make the President look bad.
It’s not indefensible. Is it evil. Yes. But it’s completely defensible because of the reality of the situation we find ourselves in, where more than half the country (including the majority of the media) will attack Biden for increasing the cap right now, which would not only jeopardize other aspects of his agenda, but jeopardize Congress’s ability to pass much more permanent laws, as opposed to EOs, that can increase the refugee cap.
…Which happened because a Trump judge refused the delay requested by the government…
But everyone who doesn’t do details or who is allergic to nuance is blaming Biden personally.
Exactly. Biden hasn’t led us astray yet, think this just comes down, like you allude to, the current FY budgetary constraints he’s under and the multiple competing needs right now.
We never were going to fix 4 years of sabotage in his first hundred days.
Here’s the dirty little secret. It’s not that hard to get a security clearance. A background investigation can bring out concerning details but much can be overlooked with a statement of compelling need.
I haven’t read the entire thread yet, but it seems to me that Biden might need a bit of time to rebuild the immigration service to be able to handle additional refugees in a humane manner. I guess I’ll withhold judgment for now - the Trumpies did a phenomenal amount of damage to our ability to handle immigrants and refugees properly. I say this as the daughter of immigrants. I hope the pause allows people coming into America to be treated fairly, respectfully, expeditiously, and in a welcoming fashion. We need immigrants; they need to be treated right.
Solid, agreed.
That said…
I think it’s a political mistake to have left it 15k. Even going to 20k, symbolically would have been equally responsible and easier politically.
Bothers me when avoidable mistakes are made.
ETA- at least they can see it, credit where due…
