The devil doesn’t need an advocate! Jesus, just stop. We said we would hold Biden accountable to his promises, didn’t we? Or are we cowards and lickspittles like the Republicans?
Dumb move. The right is going to act crazy regardless of what you do, so do the right thing.
There is a practical reason for his decision. I expect he didn’t make it lightly.
That said, it is stupid politically. He could have raised it some, it’s not really excusable to leave anything trump started untouched.
We depend on him not just for leadership but also to avoid the bunker.
It’s not unreasonable to be disappointed here.
Let’s see what happens in the coming days. Remember Tammy Duckworth…and her concerns were answered.
I do agree with the concerns of Dems being portrayed as responding to Republicans and how it’s done. Republicans are a guerrilla group out to install a Herrenvolk society.
I haven’t been able to read Ignatius’s WaPo article yet, but I suspect this marks the start of going after the ringleaders of the insurrection. I’m willing to bet Patel has the goods on Trump as well as others. If he’s looking at a long prison term, I think he flips.
Two good things about what he’s set to do (if he does them):
-
The processing of refugees may be speeded up.
-
Trump’s policy was designed to ignore (or worsen?) the plight of refugees from Africa and from Muslim countries. Biden still has a chance to fix this.
Yes, but 15k is pitiful, seemingly could have gone to 25-30k and still done all this
Times Ten…my agreement. I look at this as a communication fuckup of the first order. It has to be straightened out, quick. There are people in place to handle this, both the on-the-ground problem and the explanations
I agree.
Leaving the “cap” untouched would be … futile.
If I were Biden I would be sick of all the fawning adulation deserved or not and would then make a dumb move just for Lulz.
Later I would play fetch with Major.
…and then I would respond to the likely backlash by displaying the ability to respond to public sentiment like any good leader should.
That’s why you should vote for me.
Speak for yourself. He never promised that he was going to deliver everything the BernieBros insisted they wanted.
And he’s smart enough to take in new facts on the ground as reality changes and adjust fire as needed, no matter how much hand-wringing and whining the left will do about it.
Back when he made the remarks, things looked very different at the border.
What would you rather have, someone who ignored facts and reality and pushed ahead with some nebulous thing that would end up not being delivered?
True and there weren’t a bunch of nasty covid variants in the mix either. This isn’t easy.
It’s for this fiscal year. Next fiscal year begins in Oct. The challenge of fixing the immigration system which Trump ran into the ground amidst the limitations of COVID (capacity limits make it harder to resolve the crowding issue at the border) and the fact that he doesn’t have his full team in place make a punt to the fall reasonable. The cap will need to rise, however, as Biden’s decision to withdraw from Afghanistan will cause an influx of refugees fleeing the Taliban and we will need to open doors for them.
(I deleted the rest because it carries on in the same vein.)
We’re not talking about Sanders or his voters. We’re talking about a plan Biden made a big speech about in February; which the State Department then detailed for Congress; and which Biden then detailed further.
Keep blaming “BernieBros” and the left. I’m sure it’s very convincing.
Checks timeline… Right as all the unaccompanied minors started stacking up at the border and what had been manageable became less so.
So nice to see the Democrats go back to the normal circular firing squad, taking down our own and doing the Republicans’ work for them
People seeking asylum at the border are not refugees as discussed in the article.
Refugees are people who apply for the status in their home countries. Only if it is granted do they come here, with explicit permission.
If keeping people from crossing our southern border were as simple as changing a quota, that problem would have been solved decades ago. In fact it has nothing to do with the refugee system.
That’s not a bad description of what Biden is set to do here.
At the top level, sure. But resettlement is ultimately more local, where you’re relying on the same resources and assets to resettle folks. And unaccompanied minors are rather more work, since you can’t just leave them off somewhere to fend for themselves.
Our system doesn’t have infinite resources.
Maybe the BernieBros can offer their $50k BernieBucks handouts to pay for increased resourcing for refugee resettlement?
You gotta find a better way around this Joe
True but every coyote south of San Diego will tell their clients “C’mon down!”
Still not a good enough reason to keep the trump era cap
but undoubtedly it will happen.
I think there is a whole lot of signalling behavior going on.
There is something missing to this story. I do not know that we have any idea of the reason behind this move. Biden is not stupid or cruel. If he is making this move something is behind it. Maybe a deal of some sort to kill the filibuster? I don’t like this move but I am taking a wait and see approach. I see no clear motive for Biden to do this so there must be an unclear motive. I do not buy that he is doing it because he does not like refugees or he suddenly started thinking the wall works. There is something else at play here.
