The Senate Judiciary Committee is hosting a confirmation hearing for Kristen Clarke, President Biden’s pick to lead the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. If her nomination is approved by the Senate, Clarke’s ascent to the helm of the division — where she started her legal career as a line attorney — would be historic, as she would be the first Black woman confirmed to the role.
Who’d have thought that being in favor of civil rights would one day make you a target of opposition for Republicans, but here we are. Tells us a lot more about Republicans today than Ms. Clarke, unfortunately…
It must be weird being a GOP man. You go to bed at night worried sick that strong black women are going to eventually run a big part of the government. And your worries are grounded solely in them being black, and being women. That they might be good at their job is immaterial to you.
I’m grateful every single day for the Georgia Senate wins. Can you imagine how hamstrung Biden would have been if the Party of Evil still held the gavels? Yes, dealing with Machin and Sinema is a tremendous pain, but infinitely preferable to Mitch and crew running the show.
WHY does the GOP ‘think’ that attacking yet ANOTHER woman of color that has been nominated to a position of power is a GOOD LOOK??? They seem to give men a green light, congratulate themselves for not being bigots and then go after the women.
Nothing new. WASPs have never cared about competency; it’s always been about the “right” people. Meanwhile, I saw a BMW with a “1488” sticker on it - a symbol of white supremacy and neo-nazis. Out in the open now.
"I need to drive my two-year-old to daycare tomorrow morning. To ensure we arrive alive, we won’t take public transit (Oscar Grant). I removed all air fresheners from the vehicle and double-checked my registration status (Daunte Wright), and ensured my license plates were visible (Lt. Caron Nazario). I will be careful to follow all traffic rules (Philando Castille), signal every turn (Sandra Bland), keep the radio volume low (Jordan Davis), and won’t stop at a fast food chain for a meal (Rayshard Brooks). I’m too afraid to pray (Rev. Clementa C. Pickney) so I just hope the car won’t break down (Corey Jones).
When my wife picks him up at the end of the day, I’ll remind her not to dance (Elijah McClain), stop to play in a park (Tamir Rice), patronize the local convenience store for snacks (Trayvon Martin), or walk around the neighborhood (Mike Brown). Once they are home, we won’t stand in our backyard (Stephon Clark), eat ice cream on the couch (Botham Jean), or play any video games (Atatiana Jefferson).
After my wife and I tuck him into bed around 7:30pm, neither of us will leave the house to go to Walmart (John Crawford) or to the gym (Tshyrand Oates) or on a jog (Ahmaud Arbery). We won’t even walk to see the birds (Christian Cooper). We’ll just sit and try not to breathe (George Floyd) and not to sleep (Breonna Taylor)."
These are things white people simply do not have to think about."
