Biden Officials Detail ‘Whole Of Gov’t Approach’: Climate And Jobs Issues Interrelated

Biden climate adviser Gina McCarthy and special presidential climate envoy John Kerry on Wednesday made clear that the administration’s executive actions on climate change will also address the country’s economy wrecked by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://talkingpointsmemo.com/?p=1357011

“They have been fed the notion that dealing with climate is coming at their expense. No, it’s not,” Kerry said. “What’s happening to them is happening because of other market forces already taking place.”

This is how it has to be, doing something about the warming Earth has to be seen as the big challenge, and opportunity, that it is. It’s smart to point out to the fossil fuel workers that there are other opportunities for them in clean energy, ones that will pay them more, and be more healthy for them and their kids. Focus on helping those communities, instead of taking advantage of them for political reasons as Republicans have, and they will be won over to the idea of joining the clean energy revolution. It’s a huge opportunity we are allowing other nations to grab instead of leading it ourselves.

It’s also got to be seen as something the entire government is invested in. The parts that have to deal with it, like the military, are already thinking forward about it, that needs to happen through the entire system. Everything has to be based in the science as well…and it’s going to have to stand up to the Republican attempts to stifle any movement on climate. That’s where citing the financial opportunity is key, show they are blocking massive infrastructure spending just for their political power and they will get pushed aside on it.

See post one… don’t post with a hangover.

So this is what it’s like to have grownups running the government. I’d almost forgotten.

Maybe it is just my impression, but it seems some of the pool reporters are still having issues adjusting to getting an actual answer that is not bullshit…then being flummoxed by not being prepared with an intelligent follow up question to facts just given to them.

I just can’t stop watching the press conferences!

Like doomscrolling, but without the doom. Refreshing!

Thank god. Clean energy and the economy are so interwoven, and that fact is so obvious. When I think of the opportunities missed over the last 4 years due to willful, petulant ignorance, it’s infuriating.

It’s always nice to hear from policy people who actually respect policy, have a master of the mother tongue, and know how to construct persuasive arguments. Actually, the three traits are interrelated, aren’t they?

Why yes, they are.

Man… I wanted him to read the reference tome

This volume provides a picture of likely future coal use and associated technology requirements through the year 2040. Based on near-, mid-, and long-term scenarios, the committee presents a framework for DOE to use in identifying R&D strategies and in making detailed assessments of specific programs.

This will fit in well with our white supremacist GOPers.

Enough space in them pickups for plenty of coal to power a steam engine under the hood.

Wholistic approaches require planning. Who knew? That idea will always be complicated to anyone who hasn’t explored their own place in the mess we call life. Many here, I count myself as one, have done the hard work and are still trying to find better ways to navigate through it all. One thing is clear, everything is everything. In us we share the same elements as all the flora and fauna on earth. Many cultures past and present have known this.

Our old ancestors had questions about the stars and created myths but we are far beyond that now. It’s time to move forward and not just in America. The world depends on us all to do the right thing.
