Biden Compares Trump To Nazi Propaganda Minister: ‘He’s Sort Of Like Goebbels’ | Talking Points Memo

I’m glad he went there. We must stop pussyfooting around what we are all seeing.

@blandsten just posted the following twitter thread in The Hive. It is a profound illustration of what could be if we don’t talk about the comparisons.

Most people who know the name Sophie Scholl know she was a 21 year old German student activist who was executed by the Nazis for distributing anti-Nazi pamphlets on her college campus. But people don’t talk about what happened leading up to her execution, or what happened after. pic.twitter.com/z66yUW29q7

Sophie and her brother Hans were caught by a university janitor named Jakob Schmid as they distributed pamphlets in a courtyard. He grabbed them, declared them “under arrest,” and turned them over to the Gestapo. pic.twitter.com/QGQGDtZecc

Four days of interrogations later, they were in front of Nazi judge Roland Freisler (one of Hitler’s favorites, his “hanging judge” flown in from Berlin) for a show trial that Hans and Sophie’s parents weren’t allowed in the courtroom for. pic.twitter.com/VZIOwPm5Fv

Hans, Sophie, and their friend Christoph Probst were all found guilty of treason, sentenced to death, and beheaded a few hours later.

No one talks about this janitor, Jakob Schmid. He got a cash reward and a promotion for turning in Sophie and Hans. The University of Munich threw him a celebration. Hundreds of students attended and cheered for him. He thanked them with a Nazi salute.

After the war, Jakob Schmid was arrested and put on a trial of his own. He said he only turned the Scholls in because distributing pamphlets was against university policy - it wasn’t because of the content of the pamphlets. pic.twitter.com/uXdCTUzAoN

When you think of Nazis, you probably think of uniformed officers. But the Nazis were a political party of everyday people. So also think of a janitor tsk-tsking that someone wasn’t protesting “the right way.” A student at rally applauding him. A judge towing the party line.

We like to tell ourselves Nazi Germany was so horrific it could never be repeated. Maybe you don’t personally know someone who would have flipped the switch on the gas chambers. But I can almost guarantee you know a Jakob Schmid.

John Baron/Miller is no Mussolini.

I’ll measure Biden’s debate success according to how fast Pres. Pus Pillow cancels the rest of the debates.

And I’m still struggling with some network news foof who this week chided Speaker Pelosi for referring to Trump’s “henchmen.”

No apologies for that one.

Has anyone else noticed how the Far Right has increased biker violence? There has been another “festival” in Iowa where someone was killed and seven wounded. It’s like all the thugs feel that they can kill even each other and Trump will pardon them.

Or get a Nobel Prize even before taking office. Times and the dangerous situation for our democracy now faces have changed.

Oh, nooo! Biden implied that Trump’s a Nazi! (It’s OK for the entire GOP to paint Democrats as Communists, buy y’know IOKIYAR.)

Yes, him too!

Trump will most likely respond with, “Who?”

However, many on his staff are competent - corrupt as all get out, but competent. For example, Stephen Miller-chief advisor in racism and fascism, and Bill Barr-prosecutor of the innocent to protect the corrupt.

Goebbels?? Really??
Knock it off, Joe. Tell the geniuses at the DNC to stuff it with this kind of stupid advice.
Concentrate solely on the failed promises and policies: the fact that there will be 250,000 dead from the virus by Nov 3rd, the fact that millions are still out of work, the fact that he is packing the Court with Leo & McCahn’s best right-wing lick-spittles, the fact that he has been attempting to give away millions of acres of public land to well-connected friends and cronies, the fact that he has been running a shell game with emoluments since day one, the fact that four of his last five campaign managers have been criminally indicted and several convicted, the fact that the AG is functioning as an adjunct of his re-election campaign…Do we really need to go on?

That is the only way the Italians were finally able to get rid of Berlusconi after three terms – concentrate on the policies, skewer the failed promises, but ignore the man. Let him stew in his own juices.

Also while you’re at it – get with the Latino vote for godsake, starting with the I-4 corridor in Florida. Thousands of displaced Puerto Ricans from the hurricane – in and around Orlando 400,000 and climbing.

Here’s a good quote to take home to Perez and the DNC brain trust, from the Tampa Bay Times:

“If it were a state, I-4 would be the size of Virginia. Winning Tampa Bay alone is akin to winning Arizona.”

…when asked by MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle about Trump’s assertion that Biden is pushing a socialist agenda…

See? The “Trump Effect” in action! Why the fuck is a somewhat able reporter asking and parroting Trump’s brain dead assertion? To give it the old “both sides” college try and normalize all things Trump? Joe Biden should have tongue lashed her for this inane question and asked her if she conceivably thought he had a “socialist agenda”, or just refused to answer her backwash!

Biden should follow saying “He doesn’t know anything!” with “Daddy bought him his real estate and Putin bought him the White House!” Then see what happens!

Yeah that describes Trump exactly.

Ummmmm…Berlusconi had 4 governments (over 3 time periods) and he’s currently Italy’s Member of the European Parliament (elected in 2019)

Berlusconi’s still in power making messes with his Forza Italia party. He’s not gone by a long shot…

Biden has lost a half step since he owned Paul Ryan in 2012, but one-on-one he is deadly enough.

  1. Biden keeps demonstrating he knows how to get under Trump’s skin;
  2. Biden has skillfully refused to play Trump’s game.

With one sole exception, this election is nothing like '16 (or any other year, for that matter). The one sole exception: the media has learned nothing.

With respect to Goodwin’s law, how many steps are we from “Alleged ‘Holocaust’: The Actual Story”? We are about 1.5 steps from death squads.

Yes. We are.

I think that Rupert Murdoch better fits the comparison, as his crew at Fox is always hammering away with an avalanche of lies before Donald repeats them. But I’m glad Biden entered that arena.

As for the Hitler / Nazi comparisons, there is certainly a present threat. But the long term threat is that the people who voted for Trump (resentful, fearful, angry, mis-informed people who are eager for a vulnerable scapegoat), are the same profile as the people in Germany who voted for Hitler.

If we win the Senate and the Presidency in November, and McConnell and Barr and the utterly corrupted and compliant GOP don’t sabotage it … and we have to cross those thresholds first, we will need some form of a de-Nazification program to reach these hateful deluded cruel people who don’t give a damn about democracy.

Barr should be impeached. He has already used the DOJ to help Trump in this election with the Pennsylvania debacle. See below…
