For all it’s seriousness the comedy is integral to the man and the case. Trump is a deeply flawed individual who is also an ex-president but context matters and it needs to be included that equally deep flaws in our nation’s character and electoral practices opened that door for him and his species. The facts, as outlined in the indictment (which I have not yet read in its entirety) call to mind the Bush, Junior’s adminstration’s “Mayberry Machiavellis.” It’s hard to grasp the level of selfishness and criminality displayed by that guy. It’s even harder to grasp the fact that this is EXACTLY what so many Americans want, and literally worship.

Indeed, that’s the scariest part. 30-40%, conservatively, of the people in the country honestly believe this is all made up by some vast conspiracy of others, made up solely to hurt Trump’s 2024 campaign, and that all these “others” are the real criminals in this story.

Key advisors to Florida Governor and declared Republican presidential candidate Ronald D. DeSantis have confirmed that Mr. DeSantis has ordered campaign officials to explore possible paths to securing his own federal indictment.
Yesterday, Governor DeSantis quickly joined in the chorus of Republican officials condemning the Department of Justice indictments of former president Donald J. Trump. Nevertheless, sources close to the DeSantis campaign describe the governor simultaneously directing his most trusted campaign advisers to determine which DOJ charges would be most popular with the MAGA base and in which state being indicted for such charges might be easiest to secure acquittal.
AP sources for this story, who agreed to speak upon guarantee of anonymity, would not confirm that the governor and his advisers have ruled out his being indicted in Florida due to his plummeting approval ratings in his home state. “More and more people here have come to hold him in abject disdain and ridicule,” admitted one aide, “but there are other reasons to seek an indictment venue in another state.” “Texas or Oklahoma would be excellent choices,” she declared, “especially if we can step up our program of flying immigrants and refugees from there to woke states such as California and Massachusetts.”

At the time, the crime of mishandling classified information — as opposed to national defense information — was a misdemeanor with a maximum punishment of a year behind bars. It became a felony under President Trump.
