LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson issued an order Thursday requiring people to wear face masks in public throughout the state, which has had a surge in coronavirus cases over the past several weeks.
I hate to say it, but having the hardcore R governors (belatedly) issue mask orders in these states probably helps with getting compliance. The wingnuts will scream and protest about their freedumb with any such order from a Dem mayor or county leader, but may think twice when things get bad enough for Trump-loving Republicans to issue a statewide order.
“It’s not a question of whether you want to wear a mask or not. The question is whether you want a state so powerful that it can mandate you wearing a mask,” state Sen. Bob Ballinger said in a video posted on Facebook.
A day late and a dollar short. This country is fucked. Since May and the stupid reopen nonsense, the virus has been out and freely circulating while assholes went out to eat and back to the malls and drank themselves into stupors at crowded bars.
Does anybody think that the peak New York City hit in April was the result of the climb that started in March? Man oh man, it was the result of the virus freely circulating in January and February when nobody thought it was around. This country had the blueprint, they knew how the house got built, and they didn’t pay attention.
The Coronavirus pandemic has taught me that about a third of the country is just out to lunch, looney-tunes crazy, without an ability to listen to logic or reasoning. These are people who fester in and whose habitat is the swamp that is Fox News and right wing media, and have apparently lost the ability to live and breathe in a reality based universe.
Right wing media has destroyed this country because you can’t stop a pandemic when about a third of the population refuses to cooperate with the science and empirical data. And that’s because they’ve been taught to distrust any information that comes from outside their little bubble.
It’s bad enough when it’s about e-mails, but now we’re in the midst of a pandemic with millions afflicted, hundred thousand plus dead, and they still can’t be bothered to put a mask on. I’m actually taken aback.
The really sad thing about this is our inability correct the misinformation. We have a large pool of ignorant people who are spoon-fed propaganda and have been dangerously misled. Do you make laws that enforce fact-based news (and possibly run afoul of the first amendment) or sue so-called news organizations for misleading information? The latter was tried and it failed in civil court because the so-called news organization claimed the misleading information was “entertainment”. Fox News decided that they had a news division that was led by Shepard Smith and an entertainment division populated with the likes of Bill O’Reilly. Fox got away with it. Then you also have all those AM radio stations owned by wingnuts that are broadcasting disgusting bile. How do you stop this?
Do we need to pass laws that put some real teeth in the jaws of the FCC? Who decides what is news and what is entertainment/opinion? Who decides what is fact and what is not and prosecutes in civil court? A crusade against disinformation and propaganda can be seen as righteous by the well educated and tyranny by those who have sucked up the pablum of ignorance for decades.
This is one hell of a problem to fix. We no longer have just a few well-financed media outlets who promoted their news divisions as loss leaders. We don’t have Walter Cronkite or Chet Huntley and David Brinkley anymore. We’ve got too many talking heads that practice bothsiderism when the media should demand that statements by politicians should be backed up with verifiable facts instead of opinions from “their gut”. How do you purge the cable and airwaves of propagandists and return to factual journalism?
Yeah and further, if the goal is to get more people on board with masks, throwing shit and sneering at the late converts is not a great way to encourage more people to convert.
Why I respect Fauci’s cool manner, the guy is focused on the real goal rather than the sugar high of self-righteousness.
