The Appellate Division of the First Judicial Department in New York is hearing emergency arguments this afternoon on President-elect Donald Trump’s request to block his sentencing in the hush money case, which is scheduled for Friday before Judge Juan Merchan. TPM’s Josh Kovensky is covering from the courthouse. Follow along below:

There are laws, but no justice.

So far, it appears the judge is saying exactly the right thing, that the president-elect doesn’t have immunity and Trump’s actions were not official acts. I don’t see how any court disagrees with those points, so I suspect NY will turn these appeals down. You can bet that the Trump team is going to push to file with the Supreme Court and try to get a stay granted…that should not happen, this is wholly within state law in NY. They may do it anyways and push arguments back past Jan 20th in the hopes that Merchan just gives up.

Merchan needs to send a message. Sentence fat boy to the maximum (which I believe is 6 months per charge, or 17 years in jail) then suspend that sentence to begin on January 21, 2029. That’ll give the fat fuck something to think about for the next four years.

If there was ever any doubt that the law is written for the privileged and powereful recent developments in all of the Trump cases should help us understand the fallacy of the current concept of " justice" The courts are so corrupt and inept that a man got away with an attempted coup against the government they supposedly serve and they took obvious and overt steps to make sure he prevailed.

I don’t know where else to talk about this since we can’t comment directly on the Editors’ Blog, so I’m going to talk about it here. Josh shared TPM reader JB’s thoughts about Democratic messaging, namely, that Democrats should repeat over & over in straightforward language TCF’s malfeasant plans. TCF is going to pardon the cop killers of January 6, for example. So I just Xittered my Representative (a Dem) and my two idiot Senators (both Rs) to say, “TCF is going to pardon the January 6 cop killers. Please talk more about that.” I hate Xitter, but this seems like a worthwhile way to interact on that xitty platform

Thank god. Finally some sanity in the world.

Trump can still continue appealing after sentencing. I’m afraid that SCOTUS might say that appealing after Trump takes office will interfere with his and his sycophants’ efforts to fuck the country up. So, fine, defer the appeal until after he leaves office. If he goes coocoo (well, more coocoo) before that and they invoke the 25th Amendment, that will be another story, of course. If he does not go coocoo and gets through his term, continue the appeals then, no?

A bit OT, but also in reference to Josh’s editorial that had this nugget:

Turns out Amazon paid not for ownership but simply licensing a whopping $40 million. Yes, $40 million straight into the Trump family’s pocket. (Really, what do you think the expenses for this charade amount to?) And there was a bidding war to get on board. Disney and Paramount got outbid by Amazon. Sad! They lined up to get their chance to hose Trump down in cash in a kind of licensing wet t-shirt contest.

Why am I just finding out they’re making a Pretty Woman update?!

Does that mean it is now time for John Roberts to ride to the rescue?

I would like Trump to flee to Greenland.

So Trump’s gonna invade Greenland, declare war on Denmark, seize the Panama Canal, and–this is a nice touch–rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.

Next week we’ll hear he’s gonna rename it the Gulf of Trump.

And the week after that…

So the Greenland, Canada and now “Gulf of America” talk should lead directly to a discussion about Trump’s obvious dementia issues. I guess the White House will be considered a dementia residential unit after Jan 20th.

I recall that Todd Blanche was highly respected before he sold his soul to the Trump. I wonder if in his heart of hearts he’ll consider his 30 pieces of silver (e.g. a position of power in the new Trump administration) adequate compensation for having betrayed his oath to the Constitution while defending Trump?

Or just more incentive to go for that third term Bannon keeps talking about.

Have we ever before seen someone convicted of a crime by a jury whose argument becomes basically, “Fuck you, I am the law now?”

I know the audacity train is just getting up to full steam, but this just amazes me all the same.

Prolly not consecutive but rather concurrent jail time as he’s a “non violent offender with no prior record”
But I suspect a stern lecture and a fine which trump will ignore is all that will happen and donnie will be doing it remotely

Melania ain’t no Julia Roberts and Trump sure as hell ain’t no Richard Gere.
