AOC Wants ‘Uncomfortable’ Concessions From Biden To Party’s Left Flank | Talking Points Memo

There are no “Biden People”. There are patriotic Americans who believe that TRUMP is the evil that must be dealt with first and foremost. For many folks, Joe Biden was not their first choice. But he is the nominee, and those who want to save the country will vote for him without regret or extortion…

It is beyond Joe Biden’s ability to undo everything Trump has done (and will do in the next 9 months). But maybe he could propose a plan to fix some of it. Clearing away the wreckage is job #1.

I am officially over Ms AOC. She has clearly bought into her press, making her think she is the most important person in the government right now. She needs to learn that those of us who have been working for progressive ideals for DECADES before she was even born understand that you don’t succeed with demands and threats, but with persuasion and hard work. She won a totally Democratic district by out maneuvering the incumbent. Good for her. But somehow the media (and her supporters) have turned that automatic win into a HUGE victory for left wing politics. She needs to be a bit more humble and self-aware. I appreciate her passion, but she is not the be all and end all for the Democratic Party. Given that her passion lead her to support a man who isn’t even a member of the Party, and now is less than enthusiastically supporting the Party’s presumptive nominee, says a whole lot about her.

Yes Biden should talk with her and OTHERS in the movement and listen to their ideas, but he should NOT let them demand that their support is predicated on his capitulation to them.

Bernie got concessions in 2016, and he still dragged his feet on endorsing HRC. A lot of his people are smearing Biden as a rapist, have #NeverBiden pinned to their profiles on twitter, and are openly saying they’d rather see the country burn to the ground than vote for Biden. And I don’t just mean the bots and trolls. I mean blue checkmark surrogates and supporters.

Any party nominee is a compromise candidatge. That is the very nature of primaries. But I don’t see any other candidate’s supporters openly calling for third party votes, engaging in smears of the party’s nominee, or otherwise trying like hell to pave the way for a second Trump term. It’s like they’ve decided they won’t get everything, so none of us can have anything.

Her comic timing needs work.

So maybe it’s ok to heighten the contradiction for a few more decades until progressives can finally win? You know why right wing fringe lunatics dominate the GOP? They vote!!!

You honestly think she misses that?

Is it your impression that, if Biden makes some of the concessions she’s talking about, she will then be “comfortable" with his candidacy and/or his administration?

In fact it will only grow larger as the country implodes economically.

This is the reason people like you either voted for Rump or didn’t vote at all. The idea that the country will implode and then progressive values will really be universally accepted. Forget the fact that the Dem base didn’t want it, forget about the fact that many groups are being mercilessly attacked, forget about all that. Just let the country be savaged and eventually, we’ll all get our progressive rewards.

Because anything/anyone else is just collateral damage.

“Beating Donald Trump is a matter of life or death for our communities” – but first listen to meeeeeee!

If she understood this point she would have already endorsed Biden. She had a chance to send a powerful unifying message. Instead, she said something which is sure to drive some voters to cast their votes for Trump, be it directly or by omission.

I guess it’s marginally valuable to know what the hostage-takers’ demands are.

AOC is not wrong to suggest areas where Joe can get better on the issues. This was not a suggestion, or a policy discussion. She’s openly stating that she will condition her full-throated endorsement on his concession to her demands. That’s bullshit, and she can screw off over it until she rethinks her Bern-it-all-down bullshit.

Bernie did not help in 2016 for several months…Think AOC is smarter than that…she quit being in the ring for bernie after the hand writing was on the Wall and SAID SHE WOULD SUPPORT THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE…

Bernie is still strattling the fence…just like 2016…Not helpful…Sulking is not cute on a 78 year old man…

If she were talking about concessions that give her “everything” …

While this is true, and I will hold my nose and vote for him, he could at least come out with a very strong condemnation of ALL Republicans… instead we get the good people on both sides bullshit

A Democrat has to get elected President first, before progress is made. Lowering the age to 60 is a “reasonable” first step, and easier to defend against Republican attacks about Socialism. You have to get elected first.

AOC doesn’t get this, Bernie doesn’t either, but most voters get it. Which is why they lost the primary.

I’m not sure I agree.

I imagine you don’t see Biden supporters as mindless robots who blindly do what they’re instructed to do …

You bring up a good point and that is that Biden will most likely surround himself with highly competent people and some of those Cabinet members or advisers will have a progressive approach to their jobs.

Yes, this. It was a smaller question until Republicans made it clear during the Obama administration that compromise was not only impossible but, from their perspective, contraindicated as a rabid, weaponized base required fresh meat on a regular basis.

Historically Biden is not a good response to this but we can hope. That and hope that AOC et al get some major concessions that Biden will feel obligated to defend or at least demand due compensation for. One of the things that nearly drove me mad was Obama negotiating with himself and winding up giving Repuglicans most of what they wanted in awful deals like the Grand Bargain.*

*Thankfully Republican racism, reaction and revanche were so strong they couldn’t accept.

As soon as AOC has the guts to push back on her supporters who demand a stop to all deportations can we take her seriously. For her to even amuse her supporters by entertaining that as a reasonable position is outrageous and completely undermines her on positions that perhaps might be worth talking about. Try running on 100% open borders and a promise that as soon as you make it into this country by any means that you can’t be deported and see where that gets you with the overall electorate. She should also stop playing dumb by pretending that Biden’s comments on aspects of possible heath care overhaul are the only things they’re doing. Lowering the medicare age is one small aspect of overall plans - her attacks are disingenuous and she’s going to probably quickly learn that alienating 70% of the democrats is not going to be a path to gain concessions.
