Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL) announced on Friday that he will not seek reelection in 2020, joining the ranks of several House Republicans retiring after this term.
For the record, since I almost entirely commandeered the thread on Sean Duffy’s retirement earlier this week, I wanted to let folks know, I kept my promise. My absentee ballot registration is in. Even the lady in the Town Hall said we don’t have a date yet, and I countered with, we don’t even have candidates yet, but I want to be ready (given my travel schedule!).
She also asked if I wasn’t already registered for this for this year because she recognized my name (my town only has 4,000 residents). It’s nice to be recognized!!!
It has been the honor of my lifetime to be asked by the people of Illinois to represent them in our nation’s capitol. Each day I have tried to do this as best as I possibly could
But there was this guy, Trump. He kept me from representing you very much. I would have stood up to him and fought for you, but I didn’t because, reasons.
OT, but I was just reading Josh’s post about Comey (and the Toddler does it again!), and this popped up in my email.
It was not immediately clear what Trump meant, but in May he shared a tweet by a supporter that said he should have two years added to his term as compensation for having endured the investigation of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III into possible coordination between Trump’s campaign and Russia.
Johnny We Hardly Knew Ye after 12 terms is going back to the family. He shouldn’t be over confident they’ll welcome him back.
“Serving in Congress has been a blessing, but it has also been a sacrifice for my wife Karen, and our boys. I regret the times I have been away from the four of them and thank them for their constant love and support.”
“I will leave the political field knowing that I have served honorably and, with the help of many, accomplished a lot for my constituents, our state, and our nation.”
I swear on my dead grandmother’s grave that I have never, ever heard of this Shimkus guy before. I guess I should thank his nobody-assed self for all the good he’s done for me…
Each day I have tried to do this as best as I possibly could
Except all those days I spent propping the Trumpster up, voting against Obamacare, proposing onerous legislation to kick the poor, the women, the POC. In other words, every day of my career.
It’s no fun to be in the minority in the House and that will continue next term. As far as solidly Republican district, that can change with Trump at the head of the ticket.
