I really think this distinction is important to establish. There really are two separate mindsets within the Republican Party, and right now, MAGA has control. Those non- MAGA Republicans need an off ramp, and if Biden can normalize a place for them within their own Party without being associated with MAGA, that secures their relevancy to continue their participation within our government. Giving them this non-MAGA status actually diminishes the relevance and importance of that fascist MAGA wing of the Party. They are now on notice that they are not welcome in America.
The news reports and commentary that I’ve mainly seen/read is framing this as President Biden’s challenge. That is partially true, as he is the leader of this country, regardless of what the former insane con-man Trump tweets. To me, this is also, if not more, an inflection point for Republican (note, NOT Party, that is dead) citizens. This is their collective " Crossing the Rubicon" moment. If they don’t openly respond, then there truly is no going back and we may very well have unrest.
We are a Nation of immigrants with diverse and frequently opposing opinions on all matters. But what appears as a weakness is in fact our strength as long as we follow the rules of law that govern and bind our nation together. It is the rules of law that are being challenged, ignored and trampled on. This is where all people must fight back against the minority.
If Republican citizens ignore this fact, for any reason whatsoever, then they have not crossed the political Rubicon, but the River of Styx. If that is their choice, then we all need to fight back for future generations.
I fully support President Biden and his speech, and I’m grateful that he publicly made these statements. Now, let it echo everywhere, and get all government officials on record. Let’s stop wringing our hands and face the situation by challenging them through the system.
After Joe Biden made an impassioned speech Thursday night accusing Donald Trump and his acolytes of being a threat to American democracy, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to fire off a characteristically measured retaliation. “If you look at the words and meaning of the awkward and angry Biden speech tonight, he threatened America, including with the possible use of military force,” the former president wildly claimed. “He must be insane, or suffering from late stage dementia!” Trump also posted a picture of Biden making his speech at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, alongside a picture of himself kissing an American flag. “Someone should explain to Joe Biden,” Trump added, “Slowly but passionately, that MAGA means, as powerfully as words can get, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
The Old Biden should retire. Has he been sleeping for the last 6 years? I don’t care how many ‘friends’ you have who are Republicans. If there’s anything the last six years have shown us is that there is no such thing as a good republican… yeah, there are a few who still put country first, but no where near enough, and even those don’t admit the part they had in getting us to where we are.
I can’t quite believe we’re the generation that not only ignored climate change to the point the earth is at risk, but have also put democracy at home on the line. And to be clear, it’s not us, but a small but significant number of our fellow Americans. Very shameful.
Now, I want to be very clear, very clear up front. Not every Republican, not even the majority of Republicans, are MAGA Republicans. Not every Republican embraces their extreme ideology.
However, very near every republican will throw their political support behind maga republicans at the ballot box. The somewhat less flagrantly fascist republicans will definitely vote for fascism if the alternative is voting for a Democrat. It’s a sick tribalism and it’s killing our country.
Not that they’d ever accept responsibility for their words and deeds. Get real, we’ve forced them down the path of violence by not acquiescing to their demands. And violence is indeed legitimate political discourse, also, too. So there.
No problem with saying "not all REPUBLICANS are MAGAs " … you have to leave a door open as you turn up the heat - so that those who recognize the toxicity can vacate the premises.
Now, it may be that the best that can be hoped for is that a huge huge portion of these NONMAGs will just sit on their hands … they may not stand in line to vote for Walker or Vance or Oz … they may just say I’m too nauseated to vote … so in effect they may do 1/2 of what would be best …
The perspective that needs to be embraced is that every vote that they cast for the opponent of MAGA is a vote to neutralize the MAGA toxcicity.
