The Alaska Republican Party voted to cancel its 2020 presidential primary on Saturday, making it yet another GOP state chapter to defer to President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign.
I get pissed with all the talking-head media types who seem to think that only the Democratic Party has the responsibility to be “moderate” or “centrist”. There is great opportunity right now for the GOP to rid itself of its lunatic faction, or at least to show that they’re making an effort, and run candidates as Independents in all these states that are canceling their primaries.
Keep it up, GOP. If trump is unable to run in 2020, your cancelled primaries aren’t going to help you ID a replacement.
…and for a bit of fun, someone should point out publicly that the Democrats and Obama weren’t afraid to allow primary challengers and hold primary elections in 2012…

Owing to the asymmetric extremism of the GOP, we have “parliamentary parties” now, but don’t have a Parliament. I think they’re using the Democratic Party as a kind of crutch to maintain a semblance of mid-century political normalcy.

Would I be upset if we were talking about Democrats? And the answer is most likely “no”. (or maybe I’d be upset, because I’m a contrarian. but…)
The average Democrat would not have a problem with states saying “no primary” when there is an incumbent Democrat in the White House with a 90% approval rate among Democrats.
If California succeeds is mandating that all presidential candidates release tax returns, it’s game over for Drumpf. It won’t matter how many scumbag states cancel GOP primaries, CA holds Drumpf’s tiny testicles in its mighty paw and it means his campaign is over. States Rights, bitches.
And we can’t overlook this impossible try of and end run.

First of all, the law does not disqualify Trump from appearing on the general election ballot, and the State GOP can change its rules to make the primary non-binding – or the National GOP could mandate that delegates chosen via primaries that restricted who appeared based on “unconstitutional” requirements will not be seated, and the State Party must choose different delegates.
Secondly, its not like Trump is counting on Californias electoral votes (or delegates to the GOP convention.)

There is a bar only for Democrats. Everyone knows it. And the more spineless and silent the GOP are, the more people forget that they bear 100% responsibility for all of this. Every single Democrat appearing on the television should FIRST answer any question with, “Where is the GOP? Are the GOP Senators good with all of this?” Repeat a billion times.
And I hope those of you on this forum with GOP Senators have let your feelings be known.
I would, if there are other candidates. And there are usually other candidates for other offices, so including the president in a primary isn’t really a big deal, even if it is a mere formality. (If one has 90% support within the party, what is the risk? Unless one wants to pretend that you have 100% or as Trump might insist, 150%.) It is always undemocratic to have a coronation.
I understand what you are saying but it still smells like playing the refs somehow. I figure
the economic consequences could be staggering as well. US manufacturers also use the post office to send their merchandise overseas – and when talking about smaller businesses, to bring in parts and materials.
This really sounds like a way for Trump to accomplish what he couldn’t do with tariffs – screw with the Chinese economy. And I think it will backfire even worse than his tariff ideas.
