I heard Groucho there … well played.
Nowhere will you hear the “I” word… Innocent
He’s guilty and they are looking for a technicality to get him off
Seriously, all you Republicans standing behind this con man, history will not look kindly upon your deeds
“Pizza boxes strewn all over the SCIF.” Another of their messes left for others to clean up. A perfect metaphor.
Woody Allen, specifically, from Bananas (who was channeling Groucho).
And I just watched Duck Soup last night (TCM, I think, double header with WC Fields The Bank Dick. Still makes me laugh my ass off)
Him and all the rest of his Gaetztapo thugs.
Where do we send the shovels?
You bring up a good point. I think we sometimes get a little caught up in the White Hat/Black hat view of Dems versus Reps and see Reps as a monolithic whole.
They are a party with different wings and members. This stunt seems to have been a freedom caucus stunt. I doubt the Reps took an internal vote and went with the “pros” on this stunt.
That explains why I didn’t recognize it.
And, I’ve never been ashamed to admit I’m a Marxist.
The only principle the rethugs have ever cared about is $$$$.
Republicans have three choices, not including quitting the party:
- Block impeachment by voting to acquit in the Senate. (This will keep the deplorables on board but alienate the relatively sane dregs of the GOP.)
- Convince Trump to resign “for health reasons”, keep the deplorables and the sane dregs on board and maybe hold the Senate and White House.
- Vote to convict in the Senate, lose the deplorables and blow up the party.
Donald Trump is really good at some things. He has transformed virtually the entire GOP into a mob family.
Bring in the cow …
Their blitzkrieg failed.
Our Government is still standing.
Then you should definitely watch Bananas. Allen plays his usual nebbish character, but to impress a girl he somehow becomes General/leader of the fictional island of San Marcos, modeled heavily on Castro. A great early Woody film, just stupid and fun.
The courtroom scene in question:
I agree. Stefanik is my congress person. I’ve lived here for 25 years, and no doubt we have our share of Trump deplorables here, but my impression is that a goodly proportion of republican voters around here are Rockefeller republicans, fiscal conservatives, or maybe libertarians who really aren’t requiring their congressional representative to vocally support Trump. So why does she?
In any case, it’s sure to be a way more stupid kind of day than yesterday.
I am expecting the Republicans to do the math and any Republican who needs to vote for impeachment will be allowed to as long as it doesn’t reach critical mass.
Unless Trump pulls another, even worse Syria or if the stock market collapses. Especially if the stock market collapses. Then all bets are off.
The Republicans will turn on Trump. Whether it is now or sometime after he leaves office, they’ll turn on him. Once and if Georgia and Texas flip blue, Trump will be savaged by them.
I read earlier today that Matt Gaetz consulted with Donald ”I’m this many“ Trump to plan the stunt that caused Cooper’s testimony to be delayed.
Ooh, I’m gonna have to steal that! I am also partial to “Brownshorts”.
One factor to always consider in Trump’s scenario, he is facing an avalanche of various types of liabilities, built both previously and during his time in office. As long as he is president, he is somewhat shielded. Once out, it all comes at him. Once he is no longer president, his life is over. The same is likely true to his kids and his business. When he kids about staying in office for more than two terms, he is not joking, he has to. So the Republicans hitched their fortunes to this scenario. As with Trump, to survive, they have to take the same stance.
