Disgraced reporter Mark Halperin has finally managed to make his long-sought after comeback with a new contract with “No Labels,” a D.C.-based policy group that believes he’s made amends since his firing over disturbing sexual harassment allegations, like rubbing his genitals against female colleagues.
“ There is no group in America doing what No Labels does. We’ve created a rebellious but constructive third force in American government that is finally poised to break the gridlock and dysfunction that is destroying our democracy.”
… by ignoring gross malfeasance so we can pretend that both sides are to blame. Hiring Halperin is just walking the talk for them.
As a recovered addict I believe in second chances and I believe in redemption - but most of these guys like Halperin think “the work” consists of a PR campaign of apologies written by someone else. If you want to do the work, you have to actually do the work, which can involve years, sometimes decades, of making amends.
Going without your high-paying job for a few years is not “doing the work”, and neither is apologizing “to all of the people who I may have hurt with my actions.” No one who ever thought he had the right to rub his genitals against someone due to his position of power has any actual empathy no matter how well-worded the blanket apologies might be.
Doing the work is not saying I am sorry - it is saying to all of your victims on an individual basis “I fucked up - what can I do to make this right?” Scratch through the thin surface of Halperin’s new persona and you will find a morass of self-pity, anger at his accusers and a fervent desire to be a big shot again.
I can’t imagine what a hack like Halperin could actually do for you, but I’m thinking some marketing staffer figured throwing him a few bucks and publicizing it could get them some ink.
