Some Republicans on Sunday took aim at House Republicans who continued to downplay the violence of the deadly Capitol insurrection during a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing last week that happened the same day Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) was ousted as House GOP conference chair.
House Republicans want to change the subject and get Liz Cheney off TV. They step in the shit and it still isn’t getting rid of Liz. They aren’t very good at this.
What’s going to be interesting is who the Republicans put on the Jan. 6th commission. McConnell wants to take Trump out, he understands that Trumpism is fatal for the Republican party (I’d argue it’s too late for that, but he probably doesn’t believe it). McCarthy is all in on sucking up to Trump. We may have a case where McConnell slips in a conservative who will actually be useful on the commission, and end up with an actual investigation instead of Republicans trying to muck it up and publishing their own separate report at the end “exonerating” Trump and calling the insurrection a big party. A fair, rigorous investigation is going to damage Trump and the right wingers, maybe enough to hurt their chances in 2022 if they don’t change course.
We’ll see how it plays out, Democrats have the power in the way it will run, so if it does happen (a Senate vote is still required to set it up I think) then it will be a real investigation. It needs to happen, the DoJ investigations won’t look at the same things as they are investigating the lawbreaking, not the actual reasons behind it.
I remember Republicans telling us in the early days after the November election that what would be the harm in indulging Trump’s lies? After all, Biden had won and the process would continue per usual.
Well, after a horrifying insurrection and failed coup which shook the American government to its foundations, many of those same Republicans are now parroting those same lies. And now are telling us to move on. I think most of us are done ever listening to them again, and I’m encouraged by those House Democrats who refuse to work in any capacity with Republicans who continue to promulgate the Big Lie.
Here’s hoping Liz Cheney becomes as big a fixture on Sunday morning shows as John McCain once was. I think she will be because she’s a lightening rod for Democrats and Republicans, and it suits her agenda as well.
“Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) likened the mob of Trump supporters that breached the Capitol on Jan. 6 to a ‘normal tourist visit’ and denied that the attack was an insurrection.”
BREAKING: Republicans Liken Oswald To ‘Normal Tourist’, Downplay ‘Little Mishap In Dallas’.
The facts being revealed is what terrifies McCarthy, Scalise and others in their party. Upton’s mention of the gallows is important. It highlights how dangerous the day was and the survival of our republic was at stake and still is.
…And that’s why I think that it’s important that we move forward with this bipartisan commission, get the facts out.”
And yet Paul Gosar, the insurrectionist, has yet to be called out. With redistricting and some of the insurrectionists doing prison time, this could change. AZ-4 will be redrawn this year.
It is my understanding that Liz has related on the Air that GOP Members of Congress were afraid of violent retaliation and that this affected their vote.
The GOP is a dangerous organization and has been for some time now.
Several House Republicans repeatedly brushed off the severity of the violence behind the Capitol attack on the day of the joint session of Congress cementing Joe Biden’s electoral victory during a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing last week.
There’s a bit in one of P. J. O’Rourke’s stories (I think it was in his Holidays in Hell book, but I’m too lazy to check right now), with him at a militia checkpoint in Lebanon, looking down the barrel of a rifle, and he reflects on how small that hole is that the bullet comes out of, but what a big difference it could make in your social calendar.
