Last month, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) had an announcement to make: he was picking up where Trump left off.
I’m all for this. Abbott should bankrupt Texas building Trump’s dream - and then keep building it around the rest of the state.
If he wants to do something actually productive, not just pose for the cameras, require E-Verify for every single job in the Sate, public and private.
Though considering that they’ve only contracted for 37 miles of a 1200 mile border with Mexico so far, Abbott will be long dead before they could finish a complete border fence around the entire state. It’s such an absurd culture war fixture. Thirty-seven out of 1200 is miniscule. It’s meaningless, as the quote at the end points out, “Someone who wanted to cross the border would need a GPS to find the wall, not to get around it.”
Hey Governor Hot Wheels!
Shouldn’t you be fixing your state’s power grid instead?
Almost $25 million per mile.
I’m hoping some enterprising border rancher builds an Abbott-proof fence to keep the governor out. That would be a much more effective use of resources.
:: looks up how to say “Potemkin Village” in Spanish ::
El villagio de ruedas calientes.
This isn’t about building a wall. it’s about shoveling some mega-money to Republican donors. I’d be totally surprised if even a single mile gets built. Then immigrants can go to that spot and take selfies of climbing over it, should be a million laughs…
Since some view Abbott as having presidential ambitions, Trump will likely start criticizing Abbott’s folly as not nearly as beautiful or effective as his own. And then he’ll become the beneficiary of a Trump nickname. That one will be a doozy.
“Papa Wheelie”
Not so fun fact: May 13, 1865 – The last land engagement of the Civil War was fought at the Battle of Palmito Ranch in far south Texas, more than a month after Gen. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, VA.
People are choking on their quarter pounders more and more when they see a Wyatt Earp wannabe walk into the local Mickey D’s. That’s what Abbott should be working on.
People in Texas carrying a handgun that is partially or wholly visible must carry it in a holster. Before the law changed in 2021, people in Texas needed to have a license to openly carry a handgun and they needed to carry their handgun in a “shoulder or belt holster.” Now, a license is not required to carry openly.
People with a handgun license may be able to take their guns to some places where unlicensed people can’t. For example, there are different rules for unlicensed carry and licensed carry near schools and at colleges. Also, businesses and other private property owners can usually choose whether to prohibit unlicensed carry, open carry by license holders, concealed carry by license holders, or some combination of those options.
I’d prefer Abbott, build a wall around the state of Texas between it and other states to protect the rest of the U.S. from Texas…
“It’s a 1,200 mile border,” Tiefer, the law professor and of counsel at Cuneo Gilbert & LaDuca, laughed. “Someone who wanted to cross the border would need a GPS to find the wall, not to get around it.”
You can see it from space!
And we already have a moat for the whole length.
Just a reminder –
Criticize his actions and policies, but let’s not make jokes about Governor Abbott’s need for a wheelchair. Let’s not be those people.
Needs more alligators, I suppose.
So $30 billion to build 1,200 miles of wall. That will put a dent in Mexico’s budget when Abbott sends President Obrador the bill. Are they using the same contractors who built the part of the wall that blew over in the wind and the same panels you can cut through with a Home Depot sawzall?
