I continue to be completely baffled why this is an issue. Immigrants, including massive amounts of refugees, are not bad for America. There is no reason to freak out about people. Everybody eats. Everybody needs a place to sleep. This is why people are always good for the economy! I’m so freaking confused as to why so many people get so mad about this. I’ve implied in the past that it’s racism, and xenophobia, but I don’t think I’m right. I don’t think that’s what motivates these people to believe such weird things. I’m very very confused.

I think it ties in with the LBJ quote to Bill Moyers:

“If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”

It’s not racism or xenophobia, as you point out, it’s just a need to have someone under them in the pecking order. They feel small and unfulfilled, so having someone they can dunk on is the only way they know how to feel they possess some measure of status.

If we could find a way to make them feel good about themselves that didn’t involve them ranking themselves against “others,” I think a lot of this manufactured ill-will would dissipate. Though, it is pretty culturally ingrained, so it probably wouldn’t go away overnight, but it would deflate a major cause of the inflammation.

If I were the business owner, I’d just rule out ANY guns at all. I assume that “none of the above” is an allowed choice. But maybe that’s a business killer in Texas.
