Late March/Early April will tell.
MS now doing likewise. “And now, to show you that our demands are sincere, we are going to randomly kill some of our vulnerable citizens. Their blood will be on your hands, President Biden!”
Now that we can control the weather, we can turn Russia into a giant glacier again.
I am not a Texan, but, as I said above, there is a gap between the TX state government and its population it has to serve. That gap must be filled…and I am confident that there are Texans a lot more disturbed about that.
For the first time in a year, I went into a grocery store last week to get my first vaccine shot. It was packed. I saw exactly one person who wasn’t wearing a mask, and she was about 2 years old.
Up in Oklahoma, though, at the pharmacy where my sister was vaccinated, she was the only one wearing a mask - and that included the staff including the person giving the shots. While she was doing her 15 minute wait she transferred all of my mom’s prescriptions to another business, even though my mom had been using that place for at least 40 years. This, in a city that was hit early and hard, small enough that everyone surely knows someone who’s died.
Mine is the 16 and I will continue to wear a mask. Was with my stepfather on Sunday night when they took him off the ventilator. He died 20 minutes later. He was hospitalized for 18 days.
Much of Jacksonville, MS still have no running water yet. Going on 3 weeks for some neighborhoods. They need 2 billion to redo their entire water system. I was doing some digging on that brutal cold snap of 1899. This guy wrote a very comprehensive article on it. It hit eight below zero in Dallas, Florida was way below freezing too. It was really widespread with a lot more snow for much of the country. And it was persistent in some areas lasting weeks. That really was the MOAAB. (mother of all Arctic blasts) Very interesting piece with a few photos.

Grocery store, food service, and other essential workers don’t even qualify for the vaccine yet.
In fact, it requires a lot of luck and some computer skills to get scheduled right now as it is. Elderly people with other comorbidities can’t get through, I mean people are getting up at 3am to try to catch random slots, and relying on family members or strangers to try to catch one of these ephemeral slots.
Perhaps not ironically, there’s been a running joke in one group I’m in about driving to Lubbock, because that is the one place in the state that seems to always have capacity. I say joke, but people really have been making that 6-7 hour (each way) drive. Vaccine tourism to the panhandle, woohoo.
The Texas government serves wealth and special interest. Period. ERCOT is enough of an example alone. Will not go into the long discussion here, but it was a continuation of one during and since the big freeze. It boils down to we will survive the f**cking Republicans regardless. To hell with any and everyone of them shouting praise for Abbot right now. They can die on the ventilators or freeze in their homes for all I care. We will take care of ourselves and the folks who are their victims.
I would like to see Joe tie vaccine aid to proper covid protocols.
I am so sorry.
I am so damn fortunate right now. Both of us have our complete vaccine course. Our slots came to us sort of out of the blue. Two of our friends now have theirs. But one had to go all the way to Kerrville to get hers. She was working all the angles. The other was rolled in under the medical group we belong to thanks to one past appointment far in the past. She had been looking around, her current clinic gave no guidance and she took a chance and called when I suggested she try if she had once been a patient. It worked. This is not coherent.
I’m not going there as far as the FBI is concerned. The Norfolk bulletin was pretty accurate. It came to the Capitol on January 5. The chief of the Capitol Police and the two sergeants at arms were mainly at fault. They didn’t read their email. What the fuck did they want, an engraved announcement delivered by FedEx with a return receipt?
And do not underestimate the Trump White House’s capacity to have hamstrung all of federal law enforcement in terms of their response and their interagency communication. Remember, every agency had a high-level “minder” with plenary powers delegated by the WH.
Blaming the FBI for an “intelligence failure” is too much like Dubbya blaming the CIA for an intelligence failure over 9/11 when the problem was that he was too fucking stupid to understand the PBD that the briefer recited to him on Aug 6, 2001.
That would look like political retribution, and besides, it’s not good science. Plenty of people in states with idiot governors like Texas still want to get vaccinated. It’s better for the country as a whole to get as many people vaccinated as possible, no matter where they live. Otherwise we’ll never get ahead of rapidly evolving variants of the virus.
It’s insane. There are a lot of tricks and hacks, bots and support groups, and even then it’s so much a matter of luck and a willingness to spend hours hitting refresh where you think some slots might open.
My doctors are all still in don’t call us, we’ll call you mode.
Get my second Pfizer shot on the 22nd. Will continue to wear the mask in public until the pandemic is over - more to comfort others that I will not infect them.
Once I’m fully vaccinated I plan to hit the local bar for some cold IPAs and a hot meal. I was vacationing in Key West during this week last year. Rubbing elbows with cruise ship passengers at Cap’n Tony’s.
Haven’t had a meal inside a restaurant since.
Today is the anniversary of the last time I ate in a restaurant; even then I was nervous about it but we were out of town, taking my mom to her cancer follow-up.
I am really relieved to have gotten my first dose now, but it’s going to be awhile before we can do anything like that again. My spouse is way too healthy and can continue working from home, so he’s at the end of the line, and we’re okay with that.
Then there’s the kid, who will be doing, unvaccinated, his ambulance and ER clinical rotations in a couple of weeks, while he’s back here for break.
Anyway, you can bet we’re all going to be continuing to be careful.
There is a moral issue to that don’t you think? While you are protected from serious illness, I have not seen anything that says definitely you will not catch the virus. I have only seen may or may not. If you catch the virus and are asymptomatic, you can inadvertently spread it to others.
We had discussed this after getting our second shot. We planned on visiting a friend for breakfast out who is now completely vaccinated. We discussed a special visit to one restaurant as well. But when we thought about it, we may be the problem in the long run. We could manage it by taking care but still are thinking it over. Now with Abbot dropping all precautions, it is likely limited capacity is not going to be observed and both locations will be packed with people. In those places, it is too damn close in to avoid spreading it by cough if unmasked to eat a meal. This is going to be crazy.
And those that won’t just free up supply for those who will, setting up for a nice demonstration of Darwinian Selection. Perhaps the morans will learn something, or maybe we’ll just going into the next election with a greater vote advantage that we’d originally thought…
