I think it’s more about deterrence. It’s Homan’s (ICE) obsession, the reason he came up with the idea to separate kids from immigrant parents in the first Trump administration. The El Salvador prison, Guantanamo, Alcatraz, it’s all about scaring potential illegal immigrants from trying to come here, regardless of how the deportations wend their way through the courts.
I’ve lost Morning Memo… several posts make no sense. Others reference graduations nowhere to be found on TPM. And then an AI reference not associated with the article but written like the lead photo was AI of trump which it was not.
Geesh!
No I am not English. I live in Arizona.
Markwayne is at it again? Rikers is a NYC jail, not a federal prison. Prisoners at Rikers run the gamut from those charged with pickpocketing to those charged with murder. Also convicts serving a sentence under one year, like Allen Weisselberg. I would agree with Markwayne that Weisselberg is “notorious.”
Even the most pristine low-security prison is a hellhole. Prisons have bars, and locks and keys, everywhere and very little natural light. Small cells for inmates… Nearly every minute of the day is mapped out for you. Terrible food. Often prisons are wretchedly cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Threats of violence, from guards and other prisoners, are a constant. Don’t get me started on solitary confinement. And prisons are often (usually?) located far from where prisoners’ family and friends live (their lawyers, too), and where access by public transportation is limited, so visits are infrequent if possible at all. To suggest that any prisoners are kept “comfortable” is absurd. And the notion that making prisoners’ lives miserable will make them regret their crimes shows a poor grasp of human psychology.
Sadistic fantasies.
(I just spent an inordinate amount of time trying to determine how many NY state correctional facilities are in Elise Stefanik’s district. I’m not sure how many, but there are quite a few, including some notorious ones like Clinton, better known as Dannemore, a maximum security prison up near the Canadian border.)
