There has always been a nasty strain of provincialism in some Americans, a very unenlightened approach to self-interest. “Talk English.” “Go back to where you came from.” “You smell funny.” “Are you a boy or a girl?” “That ain’t real food.” “You know, I can make may own hollow-tips for 37 cents a bullet.” In short, people who aren’t very curious about anything. These slovenly minds are the Trump base.

Unlike the affected NYC crowd, strolling Central Park with Sunday’s NYT book review folded over in their back pocket? Where no one has a job but everyone has a career - and all the women are dead serious. And it’s all about pecking order (money). But I feel some sympathy, New Yorkers are still stuck with the EuroTrash.

You can understand without supporting or endorsing.
If we go down that road, as someone of Scottish extraction I should be allowed to kill Englishmen, and as someone of Belgian extraction I should be allowed to kill Germans, but I’m not in either case. And my family didn’t sit out WW2 because we didn’t want to allow any British ships in our ports - a decision that killed a lot or merchant seamen and cost us a lot of time, but hey that Cromwell guy was a bastard, right?
(Sorry if this post seems too snarky, we’re all on edge right now, but the sins of hundreds of years ago have been used to justify a lot of sins in modern times, sort of a sore point for me…)
I can see that but Cromwell’s sin is still alive and the effects are still felt.
There would not be a separate country inside the Republic but for Cromwell so he is responsible for a sin that lives to this day.
I have to wonder if King would be so flippant if these were Irish immigrants…

True, but again we can’t punish those who live in Northern Ireland today for what Cromwell did then and they did vote to stay with Great Britain when asked about it. If we believe in democracy and local determination then we need to allow that they’re living as they’ve chosen to live. Otherwise, the native Americans in California and Texas will start asking us about our move-out dates…

O I agree with that. Besides, the Brexit just might solve the problem. Northern Ireland needs the EU. They are not going to be able to stay in the EU if they go with Britain, so it might be time to reconsider, finally and I hope so with all my heart.
The only poll that counts is the one in November. We found that out in 2016. Nothing is certain.
