Yup, Trump Was Pressuring Ukraine Way Before Notorious Phone Call | Talking Points Memo

It is becoming increasingly clear that President Trump’s pressure campaign on Ukraine began long before President Volodymyr Zelensky took power in May 2019, and likely extended far back into the tenure of his predecessor.

Yes and no. I think it might be more accurate to say that they’d found a corrupt deal to make with Lutsenko that suddenly had to morph into pressuring the Ukrainian government because there had been a regime change. Also, like Lutsenko, it sounds like Poroshenko was more than willing to play ball in exchange for goodies, so I dunno if “pressure” really applies there. The bribery doesn’t seem to have changed into extortion until Zelensky took over.

ETA: Also worth noting, this was the US gov’t interfering in Ukrainian elections in order to get the Ukrainian gov’t to interfere in our own. It completely obliterates Trump’s claims of concern about Ukrainian corruption because it was, from the get-go and ground up, our gov’t being abused to further corrupt and undermine Ukrainian democracy.

Trump:

Boldly leading the way in molding the words “corrupt” and “crime” into verbs in American conversations.

“Corrupt” was already there. He finally got “crime” on board.

There’s lies by a coward of weak moral character, and then there’s planned, intended, organized lying that’s part of a lifestyle.

The Republican Party lacks traditional values.

It is clear that Trump has long-since moved from using “lawyers as representatives” in the conventional sense of legal representation.

For the past couple of years, Trump has moved into the realm of making himself above the law.

And finding

  • Congressmen
  • Judges
  • DOJ personnel

All of whom deal with the concept of “law”…people who can make him attain that plateau…and a Communication Apparatus which can distort this reality…followed, eventually, by a terror mechanism similar to that of his buddy in Russia.

Has the Senate had its phones taken away yet? I doubt that happens before the swearing in (for all the good that will do).

How do you make sense of the interference claims? Poroshenko took a pretty solid stance against Russia but he couldn’t realize his desires without USA assistance. Interfering with an American election, no matter what candidate you were supporting would be extremely risky. He may have preferred Clinton but it would be crazy to do what he’s alleged to have done. He was in a tough race himself at the time. He had nothing to gain and everything to lose.

If he’s not reelected he’ll find out just how below the law he is. Most of his escape routs rely on incumbency and ownership of process. That goes away if America wises up in November.
