U.S. Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch was holding an event to honor a murdered Ukrainian anti-corruption activists when she received the call from Washington that President Trump had booted her from her post.
The contrast between the character and patriotism over a lifetime of service that Yovanovitch, Taylor, and Kent exhibit, and the self-serving corruption of Trump and his enablers and cronies is breathtaking.
What better tribute to Handziuk could there be than to use her murder in bringing down the most corrupt president this country has ever seen? Handziuk was fighting corruption in Ukraine. Yovanovitch was fighting corruption. Giuliani and trump are trying to foster the interests of the murders of that brave woman.
Make no mistake: Trump’s efforts to neuter Biden was not merely political here; he was furious that Joe Biden was so highly successful at combating corruption in Ukraine–a fight that uncovered enough on Paul Manafort that Paulie, Trump’s campaign manager-- landed in the clink.
So now Trump is trying to rewrite that history completely and accuse Biden of being the “corrupt” one. I wish the news media would point this out more often.
Although a the point was repeatedly made that President can remove an Ambassador at any time for any reason, that was not necessarily the view of the founders. When discussing whether the Senate should also approve removals as well as appointments James Madison argued not but said “the wanton removal of a meritorious officer would subject [the president] to impeachment and removal from his own high trust.” Like other presidential powers it was intended to be used in the national interest not at whim or in pursuit of personal agendas. The founders might well consider her removal and impeachable offense.
