Yellen Doubles Down On Support For Nixing The Debt Ceiling | Talking Points Memo

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Sunday reiterated her support for axing the debt ceiling days after 11 Republicans helped Democrats pass a two-month extension, following Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) backtracking from his brinksmanship on the debt ceiling in an offer to Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

I hate it when Dems give away their leverage at the START of negotiations. And when you have a party whose strategy is always hostage-taking, you just canā€™t do that. Ugh.

This is an idea we should all be Yellen for.

(Sorry, I had to do it)

Repubs WILL, however, filibuster again. Creating a leadership vacuum thatā€™s existed since January.

Great idea, but we need more committed Democrats in Congress to make it happen. Republicans will never vote for it because they enjoy the fan dance of potential default as a political weapon.

Yellen; always the voice of reason when everyone else is running around like their hair is on fire. She presents sound fiscal reasoning against the tide of republican stupidity.

Looking at youā€¦Moscow Mitch

Decades ago I attended a seminar instructed by an organizational management expert. After he had finished speaking, I walked up to him to ask why companies and organizations fail. He told me that they reach a point where they develop structural problems that they cannot correct. When you consider the Electoral College, the filibuster and the debt ceiling, the U.S. seems dangerously close to that stage.

For over a decade, ā€˜bipartisanshipā€™ has been a toxic fantasy, like mermaids and unicorns but with white shark teeth and appetites.
Itā€™s past time to discard the non-constitutional institutions (like the filibuster) that supposedly encourage it.
When they have no other choice, the reactionaries may come back to the table.
And, if they donā€™t, Congress can still carry out the governmentā€™s business without them.

Bank them for a rainy day.

The greatest lie of last century is that private enterprise is more efficient than government. In America, we are beset upon with far more middle management layers than allow for smooth operations. The paperwork and endless attention to policy and procedure does not spring from a vacuum.

And nearly every large company operates with a standing debt.

I think some fisticuffs on the senate floor are long overdue. Any little prick that sends a letter like that needs some punching. Geezus what a small piece of shit is Mitch.

Heā€™s floundering more and moreā€”because heā€™s operating from a very weak position and he knows it.

Heā€™s also soulless, evil, and concerned only with amassing more personal power.
