Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) sent a lengthy letter to the attorney of Harlan Crow—the GOP mega-donor who was recently exposed for showering Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in luxury trips and gifts for decades – rebutting claims that Congress didn’t have the authority to inquire about Crow’s gifting.
Ooooooh, a lengthy letter. All he did was force some first year associate to work all night reading the damned thing and researching case law. Rich people don’t read, or give a fuck. Nice try, though.
while responding to a May 8 letter from Crow’s attorney Michael D. Bopp.
Michael Bopp, named by The Hill as a top lobbyist for 2022. Not the James Bopp, who defended MTG in her 14th amendment disqualification case. He’s (Michael) got quite the resume. Crow is likely paying $3-5k per hour for this.
No bribes were made, legally speaking. That’s the problem that the committee is looking into, that accepting 100s of thousands of dollars worth of hospitality and doing all sorts of financial favors for the justice’s relatives is not against the law. There’s loopholes, and there’s barn doors. This one’s an open barn door.
Among those of us who didn’t just fall off the turnip truck, we know that congressional subpoenae are always preceded by an invitation to respond by other means. That is what’s happening here. And given Crow’s very substantial resources (as demonstrated by who he’s hired to represent him in this), this subpoena is going to be contested and litigated. So yes, they do have cross the 'T’s and dot all the 'I’s. Whining about it is juvenile.
I’m sure I’ll regret this, but although we do appreciate your knowledge and comments, I, for one, could do without the insults. Not sure what it accomplishes when you are preaching to the choir in this forum.
Yeah, let’s criticize Senator Wyden for doing something as @john_adams has cynically and profanely done; the headline is just a headline, the context is in the lengthy letter. Let’s just sit back and do nothing because cynicism and pessimism is best done in cyberspace where the object of the criticism isn’t reading it.
It’s the rich boy response. Hire a big time lawyer and let him do the worrying. Meanwhile delay, delay, delay, and this will eventually wear everybody out and they will give up.
Press an all out assualt and crush both clarence the corrupt and his sponsor harlan crow in the court of public opinion. Keep the corruption of both scotus and their wealthy benefactors front and center in the daily news.
He could have said it nicer, but ‘Senate brain’ is a real phenomenon among Congressional Democrats. It’s led various MAGAs to run out the clock on Congressional requests, including subpoenas (see Jordan and the Jan 6th committee).
If we don’t want that to repeat that mistake over and over, we do need to put pressure on Senate Democrats to get to the subpoena part very quickly. Give Crow and Co a month to comply with the voluntary request, then subpoena.
