Wyden Blasts Crow For Dodging Questions About Gifts To Thomas: ‘Disappointed But Unsurprised’

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) rebuked GOP mega-donor Harlan Crow, who was recently exposed for years of showering Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in luxury trips and financial benefits, for refusing to answer questions about the gifting and whether it complied with federal tax law.

Well done Wyden.

I don’t recall ever hearing this “legislative purpose” argument used against Congressional standing (to investigate/subpoena/etc) before the Trump era. Has it always been a thing and I missed it, or is it simply the latest cynical stonewalling gambit?

And, of course, the reactionaries will defend and obfuscate on behalf of the instruments of their power play.

A Supreme Court Justice defying a subpoena. Yes, it will happen and then nothing will happen.

“When does the stench get bad enough that SCOTUS stops the cover-up and ends the mischief?”

Ah, never. The Roberts court will never clean up their mess. What better example to do so than Thomas?

Appearance of Impropriety.

They sure do…what’s happening these days is that SCOTUS has descended into the land of fascism…which depends on raw, coercive power, not shared norms.

This coercive power cares not a whit for those deemed lesser.

Thomas should resign.

Do we have any DOUBTS about how Thomas will VOTE on the case before SCOTUS – right now – about the power of the EPA agency that has a personal impact on Harlen Crow’s land deals?

Will Crow ask for his money back if Thomas votes against his interest and let’s the EPA power stand?

“I believe in the integrity and honesty of the Court and that of all nine Justices,” he wrote.

There’s that word again. Well senator Crappy of ID why are you so scared of testing that belief there buddy?

“I believe in the integrity and honesty of the Court and of all nine justices.” Amazing the power of belief to conjure a fantasy world so obviously at odds with indisputable facts and evidence.

“Wyden noted that he would send a full response to Bopp in the coming days,” well THAT oughtta do the trick! Jesus these elderly caucasian males and their idiotic games. We need street fighters, not geriatric letter writers. Subpoena his ass today, and if he balks, throw his ass in the clink. There’s a jail in the basement of the Capitol and it’s not for storing files from the 70s. Or is it…

It’s a product of right wing judges, It’s nowhere in the Constitution.

The first I believe I heard it was when Trump-humpers were searching for some reason a law passed specifically in response to presidential corruption and plainly reading “shall furnish [tax returns]” didn’t actually mean “shall furnish” unless there was also a “legitimate legislative purpose” as determined by the tax dodger under investigation. Before that, AFAICT, it was “Congress asks, and you cough it up” (documents, testimony, etc).
