It’s not safe for US forces stationed at these bases to stay in Iraq while tensions are this high and the US is threatening Iraqi sovereignty this openly. US doesn’t have many real options here if Iraq wants to play hardball (and the Iranians have a knife pointed at their backs to make sure they do play hardball). If Iraq can tell the US to leave for a few months and then maybe they’ll reconsider after the election, that might work.

Yup. I’m actually more concerned about the dollar losing its reserve currency status, which could follow such a decoupling, as it would directly impact borrowing costs. Given the size of both our accumulated debt and ongoing deficits this would have a hug impact on government services, with all that implies.
Up until now, the damage Donnie & the Dummkopfs were doing has been limited by their spectacular incompetence, but that’s just blind luck helping us out. Sooner or later, the chooks will come home to roost…
