FBI Director Christopher Wray said Thursday that his agency had not seen evidence of widespread voter fraud through mail-in voting — a stark contrast from President Trump’s ongoing crusade against vote-by-mail ahead of the November election.
We should applaud Director Wray for his effort and urge him to continue, but it will not convince Trump to relent. After all, Donnie dreams of being declared "President for Life" and it may come to pass that the only way to disabuse him of that fantasy will be a perp-walk out of the White House in shackles.
It doesn’t matter how obvious it is there’s not fraud. It’s clear what Trump’s team is doing. Politicize mail in voting, causing more Republican voters to vote in person than Democratic voters, Then as long as he ‘wins’ the in person voting on the first day he’s going to declare victory (probably with the willing help of the MSM that needs to be first with a declaration) and then scream that the as the mail in ballots return that they are “fraudulent”. With the way things are 30%-40% of the country will buy right into that and go along with the screaming while the MSM ‘false balances’ the news about it. It doesn’t matter what’s “true” and Trump knows that. Some of that 30%-40% will buy into the ‘conspiracy’ and the rest will disingenuously go along as long as it’s a ‘win’ over liberals to do so. Then file a bunch of court challenges to mail in ballots with your right-wing judges and hey, they just might steal this election.
I tend to think it’s a little of both. I doubt that he thinks ahead that much and has a plan. First of all, he knows it freaks us out and it keeps the focus on him. Winning the news cycle is important to him, especially now when he can’t have so many big rallies. He needs the reassurance of narcissistic supply. On the other hand, if some part of him, conscious or subconscious, recognizes that he’s in a world of trouble once he leaves office, he’s going to want to stay in power to keep kicking that can down the road. So while he might not have a plan to become dictator, he does want to avoid prosecution indefinitely.
Chris Wray is my former law partner, in a different office and I only met him a few times, so I can’t claim to know him personally. I understood our politics were different. However, he was always very well respected in the firm and had a reputation as a stand-up guy and excellent lawyer. I haven’t seen anything to change that opinion of him.
Not really, though it would have been nice to have Wray’s points and partner distributions. He sure didn’t go back into government service for the money.
